Reading List History "In the beginning of time, God created the wonders of the world. When he finished, however, he saw that he had many leftover pieces. He had parts of rivers and valleys, of oceans and lakes, of glaciers and deserts, of mountains and forests, and of meadows and hills. Rather than to let such beauty go to waste, God put them all together and cast them to the most remote corner of the earth. This is how Chile was born." - Chilean Legend. Surrounded on three sides by virtually impassable barriers, Chile's rich central valley remained a well-kept secret until the middle of the fifteenth century, when the Incas drove southward in their quest to conquer the whole of the continent. An Inca army succeeded in crossing the Atacama Desert in the northern reaches of Chile, but soon encountered resistance upon reaching the central valley. Defeated by the fierce-fighting Aruacanian Indians, the Incas established a presence in the land already taken but pressed no further into Aruacanian territory.

Pablo Neruda Chile's most famous contributions to literature have come from Nobel Prize poets Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral, whose homes and birthplaces are now museums that attract literary pilgrims to Chile. Neruda's Heights of Machu Picchu Canto General and the autobiographical Memoirs are widely available in English, however Mistral's works are harder to find. Contemporary Chilean authors have earned an international reputation in the literary world. The most famous is novelist Isabel Allende, whose House of the Spirits Of Love and Shadows , and Eva Luna have all been international bestsellers. The increasingly popular Luis Sepúlveda has written stylish short novels like The Old Man Who Read Love Stories , and combines travel writing with imaginative fiction in Full Circle: a South American Journey . José Donoso's novel Curfew recalls the latter days of the recent military dictatorship, while Antonio Skármeta's novel Burning Patience (drawing on Neruda's life as a Chilean icon) was the inspiration for the Oscar-winning Italian film

Country Flag ... Travel Warning History The country's history is as extensive as its coastline is long. The northern region of Chile formed part of the Incan empire, and the more southerly regions were originally occupied by other indigenous tribes. Spanish explorers, conquerors and settlers arrived in the mid 1530s and began a struggle with the native residents that was to go on for more than 300 years. When the last Arauca Indians on Chiloe Island surrendered, the Spanish hold on the land was complete. By that time, the European settlers had already made substantial moves toward independence from Spain (led by a hero with the unlikely name of Bernardo O'Higgins).

CULTURE
Western travelers are less noticeable than in neighboring Peru and Bolivia because of Chile's European heritage. The European education of many Chilean intellectuals influenced the country's art, music and architecture. As a result art galleries, museums and a thriving theater scene are a large part of Chilean culture. Nobel Prize-winning poets Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda were products of Chile and, until the military coup of 1973, its cinema was among the most experimental in Latin America. The country's oppressed used folk music as an important vent, and was regularly performed overseas by exiles during Pinochet's reign. Religion is big in Chile and over 90% of the inhabitants are Roman Catholic, but evangelical Protestantism is becoming popular. Impressive and omnipresent best represents the country's Catholic architecture, from high-flying colonial churches to roadside shrines, some of which are amazing manifestations of folk art. Chile's official language is spanish, though many other native languages are still spoken. In the south there are perhaps half a million speakers of Mapuche and in the north, there are more than 20,000 speakers of Aymara.

The History of Patagonia The Manso River is the natural path of water cutting across the migrational barrier of the Andes of Patagonia to the ocean. Along the Manso's shores, animals and then travelers formed paths that allowed for cultures to spread and cities to propagate. The Andes were made for crossing - The Manso Between towering peaks and dense jungle lies the natural path of water flowing from East to West - the Rio Manso. The Manso headwaters lie high up in the cordillera of Parque Nahuel Huapi, Argentina. The river begins its descent out of the Andes traveling Southeast towards the Atlantic. After passing through several lakes, the Manso has a change of heart and cuts back to the West, cutting a deep gorge into the mountains of its source. There, the Manso is not as tranquil as its name suggests. Laden with large boulders within narrow gorges, the river becomes progressively steeper, until a few kilometers before it enters the wide-open valley of the Rio Puelo. From this confluence, the large volume of the Puelo meanders to the coast, passing through Lago Tagua-Tagua before reaching the expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Horse trails run along both sides of the Manso River, connecting small farms to pueblos and making the horse the only means of transportation for locals. Most of the valley's inhabitants are self-sufficient, growing their own food and selling cattle for the few commodities that the closest towns have to offer. Though the landscape offers beauty, the environment is harsh with difficult winters.

We were the first foreign firm to place our faith in this viticultural paradise, before Chile became one of the most sought-after viticultural locations in the world.
Over the years our installations have grown to reach the current 400 hectares in the Central Valley of Chile. What attracted us in particular to winemaking in Chile were the following points: The Andes Mountains have permafrost and the influence of the Humboldt Current play a decisive role in this "thermal leap." This sharp contrast between daytime and nighttimes temperatures have the potential to foment the best aromas within the grapes. - The absence of Phylloxera means that it is not necessary to graft vines onto American rootstock. Vines live longer in countries free of Phylloxera.

Santiago, Chile weather forecast
Chilean Search Engine Social customs and leisure Chile has an almost entirely European culture. Santiago has the usual range of restaurants, bars, cinemas, theatres etc. of any European city, at reasonable prices. The Bellavista area offers many folk-music centres. Hotels will have lists of current events. The environs of Santiago offer mountaineering, skiing, walking and riding. Other sports are played in clubs, to which it may be possible to get admitted temporarily. Some hotels have swimming-pools. Travel by air or bus is easy and (by the latter) cheap to such areas of natural beauty as the coast, southern lakes and northern desert. The Torres del Paine National Park in the extreme South, and the Laguna San Rafael glacier, are extraordinarily beautiful. Language Spanish is of course the native language of at least ninety five per cent of Chileans. The rest, recent immigrants or Indians, nearly all understand it. English is fairly widely understood, especially among academics of all disciplines. French, German and Italian are also spoken. If you have time to acquire at least a smattering of Spanish before your visit this will prove a good investment.

The main newspapers are El Mercurio, La Epoca and La Tercera. Condor is published in German; News Review, in English. International television stations (such as CNN, HBO and so on) are transmitted by cable. For further information about Chilean media, please see our Links Page

Shopping
Shops open between 9 and 10 in the morning and close around 8 at night; the smaller ones are generally closed between 2 and 4 in the afternoon. Shopping centers and supermarkets are open later (until 9 or 10 at night) as well as during weekends. Alto Las Condes, considered the most modern shopping mall in South America, will make Europeans and North Americans feel right at home. At the other end of the spectrum, a visit to the Mercado central (central market) in Santiago or any other city is a worthwhile taste of popular culture. Also recommended is a visit to one of many open-air markets offering handicrafts and artworks in wood, wool, clay, mimbre (wicker), silver and lapis lazuli (a semi-precious blue stone found only in Chile and Afghanistan).
