Roll up a clean sock into a ball for the baby to cuddle with or provide a small, clean plush animal for your chin. BACKGROUND="sixteen.gif" Animal Care
The following are some basic care tips on these animals. Before you decide on a pet, do some more reading and research. Possibly talk to someone who has the type of pet you are considering. For further advice, or in the case of a suspected medical problem, consult a veterinarian.
Small Mammals - Gerbils, Hamsters, Mice, Rats, Degus
Selecting
With their diverse and interesting personalities, small mammals easily capture your heart. And they fit into lifestyles where other pets would be unsuitable, such as in apartments and with novice pet owners or families that are away from home doing the day.
A wide variety of small mammals awaits you, so to pick the one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, you must learn about the needs and personalities of the different species. Do your homework before you get the pet by visiting your library or bookstore, calling a humane society or accessing one of the many computer bulletin boards [web site discussion groups] where pet owners exchange problems and experiences.
Nutrition
Food and water need to be available at all times. Many of these small creatures like to hide their food, so make sure they do not run out. Laboratory pellets as the main food source, supplemented with a good quality grain mixture a couple of times of week is the best basic diet. You can also compliment the diet with small amounts of clean, organic dark greens and fresh fruits. Be sure to remove any uneaten fresh food withing 30 minutes as it will spoil. You should also offer fresh Timothy or Alfalfa DO NOT feed your small rodent: salt, sugar, chocolate, or foods with high fat content. Healthy treats may include: plain popcorn, low sugar cereals, or bird seed. Water bottles should be used instead of dishes as they stay cleaner longer. Be sure to clean the water bottle at least once a day, using a mild soap.

Urban Strategist Feature The Intensive Pet Care Unit The Animal Medical Center uses some of the most advanced medical technology known to man to treat dogs, cats, turtles, even rats. Crazy, you say? Not if the pet was a member of your family. By Steve Fishman D r. Thomas Donnelly, a leader in his field, pokes his head into the waiting room and searches for Miss Cintron. Around the Animal Medical Center, she is sometimes affectionately called the Rat Lady, a distinction she hardly thinks she deserves. After all, she has only Junior, her black rat, and Tony, a brown one, plus two champagne-colored rats. One person she knows through her rat club has close to 100. Miss Cintron arrived a bit early this morning, as she often does. She doesn't mind a little wait for Dr. Donnelly, who's taken care of her rats for years. She takes a chair in the easy-to-clean room with the cats and dogs of every variety, long-haired breeds ill-suited to the local climate a panting Alaskan husky is there one day as well as mutts. Dog and cat owners chat amiably, sharing secrets. "I give her sushi," one woman confides. Occasionally, Mrs. Vincent Astor, who's lent her name and energies to the hospital's constant fund-raising, accompanies, in her gloves and hat, Boysy and Girlsy, her quick-footed dachshunds. Dr. Donnelly's other clients hedgehogs, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rabbits arrive in small cages. Bernie Goetz, who once shot four kids on the subway, brings in wounded squirrels and pays to have them treated. Toucans stake out a shoulder, and sometimes a couple of mallards stand, each on its own chair, honking at what must seem an unruly flock.

There are many things to consider when thinking about the lifetime commitment of bringing a pet into your life. It is important that you take the time to evaluate your needs and the needs of the animal before making the decision to get a pet. The following questions can help you in your decision-making process:
  • Do you have time for a pet?
Do you have a busy lifestyle? Do you have a great many responsibilities and commitments? Do you spend a lot of time at home or are you frequently away? As with people, pets need daily love and attention. It can be time consuming to devote this daily attention of keeping a pet clean, well fed, healthy and providing daily exercise.
  • Have you considered the other pets in your home? Will they need to adjust or will they get along with your new pet?

Provide the largest cage possible for your chinchilla. A minimum size appropriate would be around 3 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet. Galvanized wire cages are good (plastic will be chewed to bits), with mesh small enough to keep your chin's feet from slipping through. Solid floors are best for your animal's feet, but must be cleaned daily. Wire bottomed cages (the most common) can be cleaned weekly, but place wooden platforms placed over some parts of the wire to allow your chin a solid floor to move to. The "condos" with multiple levels and platforms are ideal, because they offer more usable floor space and allow your chinchilla some room to climb. A pull out tray under each level will make cleaning easier, and should be filled with a dustless absorbent litter, such as aspen shavings or paper-based commercial bedding. If your cage doesn't have platforms for climbing, a sturdy branch or other climbing toy should be provided. You should also give your pet a hide box or cave for inside its cage. This will give your pet a secure place to hide when it wants to sleep or feels upset. Wooden ones are most common because they offer more chewing material, but they may need to be replaced regularly if they can't be cleaned properly. The entire cage and all accessories should be cleaned weekly, or more often if needed. Disinfection should be a monthly task, or after an illness. Cage Location
The chinchilla cage should be located in a quiet part of your house. It should have good ventilation, be free of hot and cold drafts, and be away from direct sunlight and other heat sources. Because of their thick fur, and mountainous native climates, chinchillas are susceptible to overheating in captivity. The best temperature for your pet is 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, which is typically room temperature. Keep in mind that anything on or near the cage has the possibility of being chewed and eaten, so keep things like curtains, cage cleaning supplies, and electrical cords at least 12 inches away from the cage.
