Survey of Pet Animals in the Classroom, Purdue University
Pet Care Trust, February, 2000 The Pet Care Trust funded a project conducted by Dr. Alan Beck, Prof. of Animal Ecology, School of Veterinary Medicine, and Dr. Anthony Rud, Jr., Assoc. Dean, School of Education, Purdue University, to survey pet animals in classroom. In 1998, 1,999 surveys were sent to elementary school teachers in Indiana. A total of 428 responses (21.4%) were completed and returned. Most of the surveys came from teachers in small cities (71.8%), with the balance from farm areas or cities less than 25,000 population. Of this sample, 26.6% of the teachers kept one or more resident animals in their classroom, and 46% of teachers who did not keep resident pets, did allow animals to visit the classroom. A wide variety of animals were found in Indiana elementary classrooms. Mammals include chinchillas, gerbils, Guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, rats, hedge hogs and rabbits. The only birds found were parakeets, but reptiles included, anoles, iguanas, legless lizards, snakes (garter, corn and boa) and box turtles. Amphibians include frogs, toads and salamanders, while fish included goldfish, Betas, guppies and other tropical fish. Invertebrates include ants, butterflies, cockroaches, crickets, mealworms, hermit crabs, crawfish, snails, spiders and a sea anemone. Teachers responding to the survey discussed the benefits and the downsides of resident animals in the classroom. Examples: 1. With the death of a gerbil, the students mourned the loss by writing and drawing, and then a funeral was conducted where 5-6 students said something nice about the gerbil and then sang the school song; 2. A snake escaped from it's habitat and was later found in the principal's office.

Avoid using pine shavings as bedding , as some shavings are produced from scraps of chemically-treated lumber and have been found to cause severe and fatal toxicity. Get your pet a veterinarian check up at least once a year. Avoid giving chocolate to your pet. Chocolate contains theobromine, which stimulates the heart and decreases the amount of blood flowing to the brain, and can be toxic. Put houseplants where your pet can't get to them, as some common house and garden plants can harm your pet. Get to know your pet's habits. You should seek medical attention for your pet if:
  • you find a lump on or under your pet's skin your pet seems unusually short of breath your pet experiences a sudden change in appetite your pet starts losing weight your pet drinks often and urinates more frequently
Keep veterinarian emergency phone numbers handy at all times.

Call NVC for an appointment with "Dr.Jack" Chinchillas Another nocturnal critter that is cute, cuddly and playful comes to us from the Andes Mountains. Chinchillas require cooler temperatures of 50 to 70 degrees (greater than 80 degrees F can be fatal). They like large enclosures to play and climb, again with a hide box for sleeping and a daily dusting (a must) in a chinchilla dust bath. They are prone to skin and fur problems, gastrointestinal disease and malocclusion. Feeding involves commercial chinchilla chow (Mazuri brand) and free choice Timothy hay which is vital for proper digestive function as hay is to a horse. They can live 10 to 15 years so be prepared for a long relationship! The above is a reprint of an article written by Jack Landess, D.V.M., as a public service. Reprint permission was obtained from the Florida Pet Pages ExoticPetsVet.com

RABBIT CARE The domestic rabbit, a descendent of the old world rabbit of western Europe and northwestern Africa, has become a popular pet. Although some domestic rabbits are used for commercial meat and fur, teaching and research, and exhibition, probably most are now house pets. The incisors may grow 10 to 12 cm (approximately 4 inches) in a year. If not periodically checked, they may overgrow and cause difficulty eating. Rabbit's ears are highly vascular and help regulate heat, as well as sensing sound. They are fragile and sensitive and should not be used for restraint.

FERRET CARE General Information and Characteristics: The domestic ferret has become an increasingly popular pet in the United States and other parts of the world in recent years. The domestic ferret, Mustela putoriusfuro , is a member of the mustelid family that includes otters, minks and skunks. Records indicate that the ferret has been domesticated since approximately 4 B.C. In Europe, it was and in some areas is still used for hunting rabbits and rats. Ferrets are lively, inquisitive, and comical in their movements. They expend a great deal of energy when they are playing and then sleep deeply for long periods. The life span of the ferret is five to seven years on average in the United States. There have been several cases of ferrets living to be over 10 years of age. Geriatric disease problems usually start at around three years of age. Many people are concerned about the odor of the ferret. Ferrets do not spray the anal gland contents as their relatives the skunks do and, once they are past the "baby" stage or unless they are very frightened, they do not release this material frequently. Therefore, removing the anal glands is an unnecessary procedure in ferrets and in fact does nothing to remove body odor. Neutering the pet, however, will remove 90% of the body odor satisfactorily. Both male and female ferrets that have been neutered will still have a slight "musky" body odor, but most ferret owners find it inoffensive. Ferrets generally do not need bathing; however owners who wish to do so should bathe their pets no more than once every two weeks with a mild pet shampoo.
