LECTURE #11 - SOME FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT DANCE This course has primarily covered some highlights in the history of dance, as well as an overview of the basic concepts of the four major dance forms. The discussion of what is happening today in dance as we enter the twenty-first century could cover another semester. Can you make al living in this profession? Absolutely! Many professional choreographers make as much as $100 per hour for their craft. Good dance teachers command good salaries. Dancers who open dance studios (larger ones) often make salaries in the fifty thousand to one hundred thousand range. Dancers on Broadway y can make good salaries as we discussed earlier in this lecture. Perhaps the safest occupation (financially speaking) in dance is the college professor. I make a good salary, do not pay rent for my dance studio, work with hundreds of talented dancers, direct a company, and dance when my company when I choose to do so. I also get a long summer vacation. Professionals who work in the technical support area of our field may make the best money of all. On a final note, it is my great desire to open your minds to the endless possibilities of dance (as a dancer or as an audience member). Dance has reflected worship, community, and even terrible events throughout history. The options for the future seem exciting. Dance is once again emerging as a powerful means of communication. As a community integration dance specialist, I hope to see more dance programs that encourage dancers of all ages and ability levels (despite any physical or mental challenge) to participate in dance making. Please support the arts. They will always remind us of the good things we do when we all work together.

So You Want To Choreograph... An award-winning choreographer tells you how to get started. By Janet Roston Issue: June 2000
Time And Space
From left to right: Ben Levy, Maggie Shamdasani and Darrin Wright To understand how to build choreography, you must first grasp the three basic elements of dance: space, time and energy. These components are used to break down all movement. Using and manipulating them will immediately add variety to your choreography. Space refers to the area a dancer performs in. Space can be divided into levels like a tiered birthday cake. Used most often, medium-level movement is performed by a standing dancer. Low choreography brings the dancer to floor level and high moves like leaps and lifts are performed in the air. Another aspect of space is how dancers move through the performing area.
Energy, the most elusive of these basic dance elements, relates to the quality of movement. This concept is easily recognizable in contrasting dance forms such as ballet and tap, but applies to the different kinds of a discipline as well. Funky jazz dance, for instance, requires percussive and explosive energy, whereas 5, 6, 7, 8 lyrical jazz is based on soft and expansive qualities.

DANCER JAZZ DANCE COLUMN - February 1997
by Bob Boross
The Choreographic Process in Musical Theatre The art of choreography is almost as difficult to define as jazz dance. Many from the world of concert dance, particularly modern, have advanced their theories on dance creation and those who create them (the most notable being Doris Humphrey in The Art of Making Dances ). The world of musical theatre choreography has been less represented in expositions on the choreographic process. That is why a new book, Conversation with Choreographers , is so important. In this informative and intriguing collection of interviews, Svetlana McLee Grody and Dorothy Daniels Lister have assembled the history, secrets, and process of many of the top choreographers and director/choreographers in the business. Any dancer or aspiring choreographer interested in the world of musical theatre would do well to wear out the pages of this book. My first impression was the sharp distinction between concert and musical theatre choreography. Concert choreographers are responsible for inventing and defining the reason or concept for their piece. Their starting point is a blank stage and their personal vision. For the musical theatre choreographer, work is defined (or limited) by the show's plot, characters, music, time period, sets, and the working habits of the rest of the creative team. The concert choreographer has the primary creative responsibility for the piece, whereas the musical theatre choreographer must learn to be part of a collaborative team and work with more restrictions (Wayne Cilento, for one, abhors a blank stage and pleads "Give me obstacles to overcome!").

LINE DANCING BOOKS
When I first started line dancing some years ago, sources of notation were few and far between. I usually kept up to date via friends who flew on the airlines to the US, and on my own visits. Nowadays, our lives as line dance instructors are made much easier as more people are travelling to the US, and of course choreographers are visiting our shores. As well as this, excellent sources of material, such as Jo Thompson`s Dance Link video series (no longer in current production, although back issues are available), Jo Thompson technique videos and books such as those listed below are available.
