HarperSanFrancisco, paper, $15.95 (0-06-009483-4). 230. This annual’s third edition contains fewer research and “think” pieces and more experiential essays than the second. Reflective briefs on a deathbed visit, deciding to have another child, and surgery during pregnancy could comfort anyone. Barbara Brown Taylor’s musings on a small crucifix of Native American provenance challenge Christian self-conceptions. Walter Wangerin Jr.’s appreciation of his farmer father-in-law is as wonderful as his different, identically titled essay in Best Spiritual Writing, 2002 [BKL S 15 02], and Richard Lischer’s recollections of his first pastorate demonstrate the power, however latent, of Christian community. Less strictly personal are Paul Elie’s consideration of the phenomenon of feeling like “The Last Catholic Writer in America”; the late professor Lionel Basney’s piquant “Teacher: Eleven Notes”; Gabriel Said Reynolds’ superb personal introduction to Shia, the faith of Iran; and Frederica Mathewes-Green’s ex-feminist critique “Three Bad Ideas for Women, and What to Do about Them.” Some terrific, wholly objective pieces are here, too; for instance, J. Bottum’s “Ghost of Christmas Past: Charles Dickens’ Triumph.” —

Again, please note that any reference to someone as a "Christian" writer on this page is not an expression of an opinion about their salvation (which only God knows about), but about the character of their work. In general, it means that they make use of Christian themes from a viewpoint which accepts orthodox Christian doctrines.

Betty Lease Record Searchlight 1:31 p.m. For 10 minutes it was perfectly quiet in the room where more than 20 members of Quills of Faith had gathered. They were writing. On yellow tablets or scratch paper, the words flowed from their pens and pencils as men and women wrote on topics that had been presented to them only moments earlier. The results of that 10-minute write were astonishingly cohesive, descriptive and compelling. Enthusiastic clapping and expressions of congratulations followed each reading when the exercise was concluded.

REFERENCE BOOKS FOR CHRISTIAN WRITERS Successful Nonfiction: Tips and Inspiration for Getting Published , Poynter, Para Publishing 1999. Successful Nonfiction is a collection of pointers and affirmations for those nonfiction writers who view their books as "products" and their readers as "customers." Self-publishing guru Dan Poynter weaves together real-life publishing anecdotes, quotations from writers, and information from his own research and vast experience to comment on everything from combating procrastination to knowing when to call in a ghostwriter. Christian Writer's Manual of Style, A A Passion for Books , Terry W. Glaspey, Harvest House, 1998. Filled with quotes and poems of beloved authors as they celebrate our love for the printed page. Penelope J. Stokes, Writers Digest, 1998. Writing for the Christian-fiction market has its benefits. One generally doesn't need an agent to get one's manuscript considered. Though the quality of Christian fiction has improved greatly in the past decade or so, publishers are still willing to take a chance on a newcomer. And most Christian publishing houses are small, making the publishing process a warmer, more personal experience.

The Complete Guide to Second Edition Susan Titus Osborn, general editor Write Now Publications, 2001 240 pages ISBN 1-892525-60-7 Eighteen chapters written by "some of the finest teachers and writers in the industry" including Marlene Bagnull. E xcerpt from Chapter 16 The Power of Your Story—Written or Spoken by Marlene Bagnull "There was a man who had two sons. The younger son said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate . . .’" In essence: "I want what’s coming to me now!" So begins one of Jesus’ most remembered and loved stories, recorded for us in Luke 15:11-32. We remember it because it speaks to us. We love it because it gives us hope whether we’re a parent waiting for a prodigal to come home, a prodigal who wonders if he will be welcomed home, or the older brother (or sister) who feels unappreciated and unloved. Jesus frequently told stories because he knew it was one of the best ways he could connect with people. I believe he is telling us to "go and do likewise."

http://www.puritan-books.com
P u ritan Boo ks specializes in scanning and distrubuting Old English Language Christian writing, in particular, Puritan writing from prior centuries. The writers and theologians of the past possessed a more pure and bold message than what is heard from the pulpit in the average church in North America today. I am very pleased to share these powerful and important texts with you. U sing the lastest technology and state of the art equipment, each and every page of the original books are scanned and made available in PDF format. There are hundreds of books in the archives which have been scanned over the course of several years. Unlike many other companies that distribute old Christian texts, I do not alter the writing or content in any way. I preseve the text exactly as it appears in the original works. S everal texts are available for dowload free of charge from this website and represent only a fraction of what is actually available. If there is a particular book or Christian author that interests you, there is a very good chance that Puritan Books has it. Please email your request and Puritan Books will send you a CD containing the book or book set of your choice in PDF format.

Yes! You can contribute!
In Christ, you have the ability Like me, your mind might go blank at first. As you prayerfully brainstorm, however, you will most likely be amazed at the result. This will especially be the case if you try it at different times of several days. At times you will be more creative than at other times. Perhaps for you it will be when waking from sleep, or while driving or gardening or ironing, or during worship, or certain days. Experiment. Share the result with Christians around the world Multiply your efforts by e-mailing me with the ideas the Lord gives you. Even if it is just one line, thousands could be touched. Guidelines

Say It With Words Always had a desire to write? Want to improve your writing? The best way to gain excellence at the craft of writing is to read the kind of material you want to write. Write about subjects that interest you. And associate with other Christian writers. That's what Adventures in Christian Writing is all about. The Art of Writing On the third Thursday of each month, a talented group of Christian writers gathers here on the FPCO campus. The meetings serve up an eclectic mix of writing workshops and speakers. Video teaching courses on perfecting the writer's craft are often used. Members discuss the art of writing as well as give inspiring talks about their work. Each meeting starts off with a devotional written by the member reading it. FPCO member Chuck Bates keeps the group up to speed between meetings with a monthly newsletter.
Everyone's Welcome Founded by FPCO member Mary Shaw, the group is open to all professing Christians of all ages and denominations. Members have written books, poems and articles. But as 2002-2003 President Joanna Wallace notes, "we welcome all Christian writers and non-writers who seek to know the Lord."

So you want to be a writer, huh? Okay. Here’s some helpful advice. Start writing Before I was published, I once mentioned to an author of several books that I’d like to write a book some day. I had been thinking about it for about ten years. The author said, “Start writing! That’s the first step.” His challenge motivated me to quit “thinking about writing” and start doing it. I got my first book published a couple of years later. Attend writers conferences You will meet editors and learn how to write book proposals and query letters. Don’t submit a query letter or book proposal to a publishing company until you know how to do it correctly. Florida Christian Writers Conference

Mount Hermon's Christian Writers Conference
Don’t get discouraged! All writers, including the best ones, have been rejected by publishers. Editors are swamped with new manuscripts every day and can only choose to publish a few. In all likelihood, you will receive some rejection letters from a number of publishers before you find one who wants it. Rejection is just part of the process. Don’t let rejection letters discourage you. Max Lucado was rejected by 14 publishing companies before he got his first book published. Don’t give up!
