GEOGRAPHY: A rock pool at Dolly Beach Christmas Island is the summit of a submarine mountain, rising steeply to a central plateau dominated by stands of rainforest. This plateau reaches heights of up to 361 metres and consists mainly of limestone and layers of volcanic rock. Geologists believe that about 60 million years ago the cone of an undersea volcano surfaced, forming a basin on which a coral atoll then began to form. More then 20 million years ago, the atoll appears to have sunk slowly and limestone was deposited as the coral began to build up. Ten million years later, this process stopped and an island began to emerge from the sea in a series of uplifts. Each of the island terraces was formed by the development of the fringing reef and sea cliff erosion before being uplifted. The lagoon drained and the central plateau was formed. Evidence of these volcanic origins can be seen at The Dales, and Dolly Beach where the basalt rock is exposed, forming the bed of freshwater streams. The island's 80 kilometre coastline is an almost continuous sea cliff, of up to 20 metres in height. In a few places, the cliff gives way to shallow bays with small sand and coral shingle beaches. The largest of these bays forms the island's only port; Flying Fish Cove.

Geography Kiritimati, or Christmas Island, is the largest atoll in the Pacific. The atoll covers 222 square miles and is part of the Line Islands which belong to the Republic of Kiribati. The island is very flat with hundreds of square miles of pristine flats surrounding the island. There are more than 100 lakes or ponds on Kiritimati. The village of London is located at the Trevally Channel and is the main village on the island. The other major villages are Tabwakea Village, Poland and Banana Village. Travel between the villages and fishing spots is done either by boat or by car or truck on paved roads (roads are denoted on the map by the dotted lines).
Click on Map for larger view Climate Christmas Island is located 115 miles north of the equator, so the weather is warm year round. Temperatures range from 80 to 85 degrees during the day, and 70 to 75 degrees at night. Fairly steady tradewinds of 10 to 20 knots keep the humidity moderate, and there is minimal rainfall. The sun rays are very intense near the equator, so we recommend anglers bring plenty of sun protection including 45 SPF or higher sunscreen, hat and light protective clothing.

    Christmas Island
    (territory of Australia)
Christmas Island Introduction Top of Page Background: Named in 1643 for the day of its discovery, the island was annexed and settlement was begun by the UK in 1888. Phosphate mining began in the 1890s. The UK transferred sovereignty to Australia in 1958. The phosphate mine, closed in 1987, was reopened four years later, but the need for an alternative industry has spurred investment in tourism. Old mining areas are being restored, and almost two-thirds of the island has been declared a national park. General Information
    Location
Christmas Island is located in the Indian Ocean, at latitude 10° 30' South and longitude 105° 40' East. It is approximately 380 kilometres south of Java Head at the southern entrance to the Sunda Strait, approximately 1,350 kms from Singapore and approximately 2,650 kms from Perth. The nearest point of the Australian mainland is Northwest Cape which lies approximately 1,565 kms to the south east. The island has an area of 135 square kilometres.
    Geography and Climate
The Island is the summit of a submarine mountain. It rises steeply to a central plateau dominated by stands of rainforest. The plateau reaches heights of up to 361 metres and consists mainly of limestone with layers of volcanic rock. The Island's 80 kilometre coastline is an almost continuous sea cliff, ranging in height to 20 metres. In a few places (about 13) breaks in the cliff give way to shallow bays and small sand and coral beaches. The largest of these bays forms the Island's port at Flying Fish Cove.
