A True
Christmas Story
There is nothing so beautiful as a child's dream of Santa Claus.
I know, I often had that dream. But I was Jewish and we did not celebrate Christmas. It was everyone elses holiday and I felt left
out... like a big party I was not invited to. It was not the toys
I missed, it was Santa Claus and a Christmas tree. So when I got married and had kids I decided to make up for it.
I started with a seven-foot tree, all decked out with lights and tinsel,
and a Star of David on top to soothe those whose Jewish feelings were
frayed by the display and, for them, it was a Hanukah bush. And it warmed my
heart to see the glitter, because now the party was at my house
and everyone was invited. But something was missing, something big and round and jolly,
with jingle bells and a ho! ho! ho! So I bought a bolt of bright red cloth and strips of white fur and my wife made me a costume. Inflatable pillows rounded out my skinny frame, but no amount of makeup could turn my face into merry old Santa. I went around looking at department store impersonations sitting on their thrones with children on their laps and flash-bulbs going off, and

Mythology, Folklore, and a little bit of Religion
Welcome! This page is essentially a massive list of links to sites about mythology, folklore, and religion. I've tried to sort them all by category, which has the advantage that it (theoretically, at any rate) makes it easier to find what you're looking for, but can lead to some pretty deeply nested subdivisions and also means that a lot of these pages do link to each other. There are links here to almost every relevant page I can find "almost" because there are a few things I don't have here: pages not in English, usenet sites, urban folklore and cyberlore sites, or any pages relating to "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys."
      Also, *please* mail me if
    • Any of my links have problems, are out of date, have moved, or whatever
    • You think I've mis-categorized something (always a possibility!)
    • You've got a site you'd like me to add to my list
    • I've got a link to your site and you wish I didn't
    That's about it . . . happy mything!

Wurlitzer Jukebox Experiences Share Your Jukebox Experiences A Trip Home This is not just a "jukebox" experience, it's a "Wurlitzer" experience. I remember the plant when it was beautiful, with large gold fish ponds and flowers lining the road to its doors. My sister and I rode bikes up and down that road almost every day...just for fun or to meet our mother and other family members that worked at Wurlitzer. It was a beautiful place for a factory. I always remember that looked like a huge old-fashioned high school. Whenever I meet people who have lived or visited that area, I ask if they know where the old plant was. If they say yes, I tell them that they know exactly where my house was...right at the end of the Wurlitzer boulevard.... Thanks for the memories!! Sally A. Frankenberger My Dad Was a Wurlitzer Dealer!!! My younger sister stated it very well earlier. I would just like to add that I am 56 years old, and when I was younger (between 5 and 15) I would play singer in the basement recreation room to the songs that played on the jukebox. It sparked my creativity and imagination for life, and I still like to play. Diane Bodell My Uncle's Wurlitzer I have always loved jukeboxes since I was young. My uncle had a

The Young Magicians' Club by Bill Nagelkerke
Traffic flowed steadily past Sam as he got closer to the centre of town and Farmers Department Store, where the Young Magicians' Club was meeting. Hard on his heels he suddenly heard the whirring of other bikes. As he moved nearer to the curb to let them past two boys, older than Sam, rode up on either side of him. 'What's in the case?' Sam tried ignoring them. He pedalled faster. The battered suitcase on the rack behind him rattled as his old bike dipped in and out of the potholes along the margin of the road. The suitcase was bound to have attracted unwanted attention one day. It had belonged to Grandad, it was the one he'd used for years when he'd been a professional magician. Sam knew he wouldn't replace it, not until it fell apart completely. 'Not very friendly is he?'

One of my favorite stories about keeping warm on a chilly night happened in the early 1940s. George Scott and Billy Wiegand, cousins who had spent most of their lives on remote farms in the Encinitas area, turned 16 that year. "We went off to see the Grand Canyon on Billy's Harley Davidson motorcycle," George remembers. Near the canyon's south rim the boys rented a cabin overnight. "It had a coal fire burning inside a big old cast iron stove. We'd never seen coal before," George said. "Back home we'd always burned wood."

    CONVERSION TO CHRISTIANITY STORIES
    "Evelyn Hall's Conversion Story"
I was born into an inactive LDS family. Part of the time we attended the Evangelical United Brethren church (now called the United Methodist Church), but when I was 15 my LDS great-grandmother,"Ma" insisted that my brother and I be baptized into the Mormon Church..."just in case it was the only true church!" Bill became baptized without the "burning in the bosom" testimony that I had and he tried for many years to obtain that "feeling" so he could feel like other members. But it never came. After I had resigned from the Church I heard him tell the Church bishopric that he never believed in the Joseph Smith fairy tale and that the main reason he joined the Church was because I was there and it was a good atmosphere in which to raise our children. As soon as we joined the Church they gave us both callings as the Genealogy Specialists. We held that job for about 32 years! We researched, wrote and published 12 family histories between us and did the temple work for all who were in the books. We were "Saviors on Mt. Zion" they told us because we were saving our dead loved ones by bringing them into the Mormon Church for eternity. They said that without saving our dead we would not be saved either. As the years went by Bill got disgusted with the Church. He would accept callings and then no one would take the time to teach him the procedures or offer to assist him. Once he was publicly "volunteered" to teach a class without any advance warning. Some of the tactics reeked of Big Brother and I started putting the pieces of a long-standing puzzle together.
