AS THE MIDDLE-EAST CRISIS ESCALATES and the war on terrorism and various scandals dominate the news; as our daily newspaper and television bombard us with the latest bad news of loss, failure, death and destruction, you might be thinking: This just gets worse and worse. Can we save the human race from itself? You might then wonder: What can I do about it? What can anyone do about it? Well, you might be relieved to know that SOMETHING CAN When Lorraine Baritz of Boston was called to the hospital by friends whose 13-year-old son was in a coma and on life-support four days after a severe motorcycle accident, she knew exactly what she had to do to help. News of the recovery traveled through the hospital, reaching others standing vigil by their own children. A couple with an infant son in a coma asked for help. Again Lorraine answered the call. The outcome was reported in the local Boston newspaper: Stories like these are commonplace, anything but common in a world where people are searching for answers on how to provide real and lasting help to others.

SECOND PHASE OF CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW CHURCH BUILDING FOR SCIENTOLOGY IN CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, WELL UNDERWAY Five hundred and fifty six men donned hard hats at 4:00 a.m. on that morning in August 1999 and started a non-stop, 18-hour-long pour of 18,000 tons of concrete into more than 900 tons of steel. This involved 130 concrete trucks, 24 police to monitor traffic and 556 workers. The result was the cement foundation of the new, seven-story, 370,000-square foot Clearwater Church of Scientology facility, under construction in the 200 block of South Fort Harrison Avenue in Clearwater , Florida.

Real problems with a fictional movie
By STEVE PERSALL
published August 24, 2001
Peter D. Alexander, The Profit director. Peter D. Alexander believes he's doing a public service with his film The Profit. For the Church of Scientology, The Profit is just a nuisance. Moviegoers can see for themselves beginning tonight. Alexander's work of fiction, based on the life of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, begins an exclusive run at Clearwater Cinema Cafe at the corner of U.S. 19 and Sunset Point Road. Alexander declares his movie to be a warning against the influence of religious cults. It's the story of a charismatic opportunist named L. Conrad Powers, who bears a close resemblance to Hubbard. Powers creates the Church of Scientific Spiritualism in the image of Scientology as projected by decades of media coverage and courtroom disputes. Ask Alexander if The Profit is based on Scientology, and he'll offer coy denials. Answering yes could make him vulnerable to the Church of Scientology's legal machine, yet he can't resist steering a questioner and moviegoers to that conclusion. He's stretching the liberty of fiction to its limit.

The State Attorney's office in Pinellas County filed the felony charges after a lengthy investigation into the 1995 death of Lisa McPherson. McPherson had been a member of the church for 18 years and, according to relatives, had been talking about leaving the church. McPherson, 36, died December 5, 1995, after being confined for 18 days to a Scientology property called the Fort Harrison Hotel, investigators said. THE ECCLESIASTICAL HIERARCHY OF THE SCIENTOLOGY RELIGION
The Church of Scientology is formed into an ecclesiastical structure which unifies and aligns a multitude of diverse religious activities including not only auditing and training, but proselytization, ecclesiastical management, relay of communication, production of dissemination materials and many other functions. Thus the Scientology religious community is united both by common beliefs and practices and an organizational form uniquely suited to its religious mission. Scientologists come together in a worldwide hierarchical religious community. The structure of this community is an important, functional part of the Scientology religion. Because Scientology Scripture requires that its religious practices be ministered in an orthodox manner, the hierarchical structure helps ensure that individual churches receive the support and guidance needed to do this. All Scientologists are thus assured of an orthodox religious observance in every church around the world. Scientology Handbook
The Scientology religion contains workable answers to the problems people face in their lives. The subject matter of Scientology is all life. It contains practical means through which predicable improvement can be obtained in any area to which it is applied. Scientology recognizes that man is not just so many vials of chemicals fortuitously combined into a remarkable stimulus-response machine. Scientology views man as a spiritual being with native capabilities which can be improved far beyond what is generally believed possible. In fact, it has been demonstrated that man deteriorates to the degree that he denies his spiritual nature and ceases to live with moral values, such as trust, honesty, integrity and other sometimes intangible characteristics. By seeing man as essentially spiritual, Scientology follows in the traditional view of man and his relationship to the universe. Scientology, however, is unique in that it contains practical means of enabling man to resolve his material concerns and so come to achieve his spiritual aspirations. In this regard Scientology is an improvement over any earlier practice in terms of what it can actually do to help man. The problems of drugs education morals relationships ... trust and others contain solutions in Scientology which do not beget further problems.
