PEACE AND WAR
Of course we should pray for peace. Of course we should be against war. Of course we should ask for the peace of Christ in the human soul - the only true peace capable of prevailing over evil.
Let us remember the EBF resolution, which was adopted at the EBF Council in September last year.
We call on our Unions to:
  • Commend the teaching and example of Jesus Christ in always seeking to break the cycle of violence, rather than contribute to it. Reflect on what our Christian faith may teach us about the use and abuse of power in this situation.

Introduction
The General Condition From the Sixth Century to the Nineteenth:
Many (if not most) informed Christians accept that the church went through something of a wilderness period starting from the sixth century. See the history of Christianity and the page on Gregory the Great for details. Many see the nineteenth century as the end of this wilderness period. This is from "Christian Belief in the Making," in The Lion Handbook of Christian Belief (organising editor Robin Keeley), Lion Publishing PLC 1982: The History of Christian Missions:
"The American historian K. S. Latourette divides the history of the missionary movement into four periods: The first five centuries saw the good news of the gospel taken as far as Britain in the West and out to China in the East, to Ethiopia in Africa and northwards beyond the Danube. Then the "thousand years of uncertainty" (AD 500 to 1500) were years in which the church lost its Bible and forgot its mission. ... The third period is that of the "three centuries of advance" (AD 1500 to 1800). ... The fourth period, the "great century," spans the vast enterprise of the missionary societies since that time."

General Essay on the Religions of Sub-Saharan Africa
Religion in Sub-Saharan Africa has changed and evolved over the last two to three thousand years in many different ways. While the traditions depicted in this chart provide examples of those that exist today, and that were affected by the expansion of European colonialism in the 19th century, peoples living in the vast area south of the Sahara desert had already sustained rich systems of belief and practice long before the arrival of Christianity and colonialism, and certainly in some cases befroe the Muslim expansion from the Arabian peninsula. Islam entered Sub-Saharan Africa in the eighth century, and within six hundred years of the prophet's death had penetrated from the Sahara to the Sudanic belt, and from the Atlantic to the Red Sea, making its presence felt among the indigenous peoples who inhabited this expanse. Other transplanted religions have had virtually no impact upon Sub-Saharan traditions. With the exception of Judaism, these did not make any permanent incursion into the region until the 19th or 20th centuries. The chart suggests three wide areas of religious beliefs and practices: (I) Indigenous African religions; (II) World Religions (Baha'i, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Sikhism and Zorastrianism); (III) New Religious Traditions (African Independent Churches).

by War in Iraq for the people of Iraq, burdened by years of oppression, by a decade of sanctions, and now facing death and destruction, for those in flight, joining refugees throughout the world in a journey of profound uncertainty, for soldiers and their families facing dire threat and days of anxious waiting, for those who are poor, whose needs are set aside while we pay the costs of war, for ourselves, despairing that we could not turn hands and hearts from the way of violence. Allow us our silence, O God, but do not leave us alone. Receive our tears, but also gather them together to remind us that as we have been baptized into Christ’s death, so we are also baptized into Christ’s resurrection. Thus may our journey with Jesus on the Way of the Cross be filled with hope, that in these days we might not lose heart. Amen.

Looking at the ethics of technology for a New Millennium
Technology is changing the face of society. Whether it's GM food, embryonic stem cells, cloning, climate change or the Internet, we're all aware of the challenges which current developments are bringing. But where do you go for reliable information, with scare stories from activists, unsatisfactory assurances from Government or industry, and hype from some parts of the media? Amid the half truths, exaggerations and agendas, is there anyone you can trust? The Society, Religion and Technology Project (SRT for short) is a unique unit of the Church of Scotland set up in 1970 to examine some of the vital issues of our times. We aim to bring professional expertise to providing informed and penetrating comment for technologists, educators, media, the Church, the public - in fact anyone with an interest in how technology is affecting our lives, and the issues it raises. We have a reputation for the quality and fairness of our work, independent of vested interests and pressure groups. Recently the SRT Project was
