PETERSBURG EXPRESS
State Capitol Grounds
210 Capitol Avenue
Hartford, CT
Dimensions: Height: 13' Dedicated: September 25, 1902 Type: Seacoast mortar on granite pedestal with bronze plaques Foundry: Paul E. Cabaret Historical Significance: PETERSBURG EXPRESS, State Capitol Grounds, Hartford, is significant historically because it was used by the lst Connecticut Heavy Artillery in the campaign before Petersburg in 1864 and 1865. It was mounted on a railway car, moving from one firing position to another. The General Assembly authorized the erection of a monument on the State Capitol grounds by the Regimental Association of the lst Connecticut Heavy Artillery, at a cost of $1,000, by Special Act 471, passed July 9, 1895. Artistic Significance: The PETERSBURG EXPRESS mortar itself is without artistic significance. The pedestal, however, is a good example of monumental stonework. The proportions and the mixture of quarry-faced and smoothly finished surfaces work well together. The individual pieces of stone are large. No information is at hand regarding the source of the stone or the identity of the stonecutters. Little is known of Paul E. Cabaret's New York City foundry. Description: PETERSBURG EXPRESS is located close to Capitol Avenue at the southeast entrance of the roadway approaching the front (south facade) of the State Capitol. It is a large (13") seacoast mortar mounted on a granite pedestal, with bronze plaques, dedicated to lst Connecticut Heavy Artillery..

Discharge Papers for Horatio Babcock (Colorado State Archives) Colorado became a territory just a few weeks before the firing on Fort Sumter signaled the official beginning of the Civil War. Although sentiments were somewhat divided in the early days of the war, Colorado was a Union territory. When President Lincoln called for volunteer soldiers to supplement the regular army, Colorado responded. Eventually, nearly 4,000 men from the Colorado Territory served in the volunteer Union forces authorized by the United States War Department. Hundreds more served in militia companies, authorized by the territorial governor, most of which were formed to fight Indians rather than Confederates. Colorado's Civil War military is somewhat unusual in that two of its three cavalry regiments were formed from previously-existing infantry regiments. Colorado's volunteer military regiments, in the order of their formation were:
The 1st Regiment of Colorado Volunteers (Infantry)
Organized by the territory's first governor, William Gilpin, this infantry regiment began enlistment in August 1861. Nicknamed "Gilpin's Pet Lambs" because of the governor's involvement in their organization, the regiment marched to northern New Mexico in February-March 1862. There they fought in the battles of Apache Canyon and Pigeon's Ranch (also called the Battle of Glorieta Pass) and at Peralta, New Mexico. Their first colonel was John P. Slough, who resigned and was replaced by Major John M. Chivington in April 1862. The regiment's first and only lieutenant-colonel was Samuel F. Tappan. The Colorado State Archives has custody of the casualty records, clothing issue records, some of the muster rolls, and the morning reports relating to this regiment.

The Alton prison opened in 1833 as the first Illinois State Penitentiary and was closed in 1860, when the last prisoners were moved to a new facility at Joliet. By late in 1861 an urgent need arose to relieve the overcrowding at 2 St. Louis prisons. On December 31, 1861, Major General Henry Halleck, Commander of the Department of the Missouri, ordered Lieutenant-Colonel James B. McPherson to Alton for an inspection of the closed penitentiary. Colonel McPherson reported that the prison could be made into a military prison and house up to 1,750 prisoners with improvements estimated to cost $2,415. The first prisoners arrived at the Alton Federal Military Prison on February 9, 1862 and members of the 13 th U.S. Infantry were assigned as guards, with Colonel Sidney Burbank commanding. During the next three years over 11,764 Confederate prisoners would pass through the gates of the Alton Prison. Of the four different classes of prisoners housed at Alton, Confederate soldiers made up most of the population. Citizens, including several women, were imprisoned here for treasonable actions, making anti-Union statements, aiding an escaped Confederate, etc. Others, classified as bushwhackers or guerillas, were imprisoned for acts against the government such as bridge burning and railroad vandalism.
Click on photo for larger image
Conditions in the prison were harsh and the mortality rate was above average for a Union prison. Hot, humid summers and cold Midwestern winters took a heavy toll on prisoners already weakened by poor nourishment and inadequate clothing. The prison was overcrowded much of the time and sanitary facilities were inadequate. Pneumonia and dysentery were common killers but contagious diseases such as smallpox and rubella were the most feared. When smallpox infection became alarmingly high in the winter of 1862 and spring of 1863, a quarantine hospital was located on an island across the Mississippi River from the prison.

The California Battalion consisted of Companies A, C, F, L and M and were known as the California 100 and California Cavalry Battalion. These companies were part of the second Massachusetts Cavalry Regiment and participated in 51 battles, campaigns and skirmishes. The California Troops, known as the California Column, were under the command of General James H. Carleton and was composed of the 1st Regiment of Cavalry, 1st Battalion of Native Cavalry, and the 1st, 5th and 7th Infantry Regiments which served in Arizona New Mexico and Texas.

The 2nd Regiment of Cavalry and the 3rd Regiment of Infantry under P. Edward Conner kept the overland route to California open. The 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th Infantry Regiments and 1st Battalion of Mountaineers provided internal security in Northern California, Oregon and Washington by preventing Indian depredations.
During the Civil War approximately 17,000 Californians served the Union as U.S. volunteers. With the exceptions of the Californians who served in the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry, the California forces took no part in any of the great battles of the Civil War; yet the service they rendered was of as great importance as that rendered by those of other states. It was as severe, entailing long and fatiguing marches across burning deserts and among almost inaccessible mountains. They were engaged in hundreds of fights with Indians and small forces of Confederate troops on the frontiers in Texas and New Mexico. It was a constant source of regret that they were never ordered east. The Federal Government deemed it wisest to keep them on the Pacific Coast and in territories. They occupied nearly all the posts from get Sound, Washington Territory, to San Elizano, Texas, and they performed their duty faithfully

Maryland Nevada The Blue and the Gray No single event had a greater affect on state flags than the Civil War. Many states didn’t have state flags before the war. They quickly drafted designs that could be used to distinguish their soldiers from troops dispatched by other states. Flags had greater symbolic value in those days. Capturing the enemy’s flag in the midst of combat was seen as a triumph. Letting one’s own flag touch the ground was a mark of shame. New flags were especially noticeable among the eleven states that seceded from the United States. Some of them adopted new flags during the Civil War, then changed flags again after the war had ended and they rejoined the Union. Texas adopted a new national flag shortly before the Civil War, continued using it as a state flag, flew a Confederate flag during the war, then resumed using its original state flag. Some Mississippi residents advocate reviving their “Magnolia Flag,” a Civil War flag that’s less war-like than the current flag! Five of the states that joined the Confederacy are still represented by state flags inspired by the Confederate battle flag—Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Arkansas. Southern flags in general are among the better designed and most attractive state flags.

Florida played an active, if less than prominent, role in the American Civil War. Once derisively called the "Smallest Tadpole in the Dirty Pool of Secession," Florida had joined the Union only fifteen years before its January, 1861 secession, and the state's population was the smallest by far of any in the Confederacy. Florida nonetheless provided an estimated 15,000 troops for Confederate service, as well as several thousand black and white Union volunteers. The state's coastline harbored blockade runners and Florida beef, pork, sugar, molasses, and salt helped feed the armies of the South. A number of military engagements occurred in the state, most importantly the February 20, 1864 battle of Olustee, which ended in a decisive Confederate victory. At the close of the war, Tallahassee was the last state capital east of the Mississippi River to remain in Confederate hands.
The Florida State Archives maintains a number of collections documenting Florida's role in the War Between the States, as well as some material from other states. Listed in this pamphlet are the most significant of these collections.

These "Summary Unit Histories and Related Records" are actually our current finding aids for each Maine Civil War unit. You will find a section: "Civil War Records Common to all Regiments" which needs explanation: The Cemetery Index and Graves Registration (Cards) are the result of a WPA Project conducted during the 1930's to locate each veteran's grave and plot each grave location within the cemeteries where the graves were found. The cards are filed alphabetically by each soldier's name. The records are incomplete and many inaccuracies have been noted. The "muster rolls" are actually the Muster-In Rolls, Descriptive Rolls, Monthly Returns and Muster-Out Rolls of each Regiment. These have been bound and encapsulated in such a way that they cannot be photocopied. Related to them is the Soldiers' Index, a 3x5 card file for each soldier, on which all information from the Regimental Rolls has been abstracted. The Adjutant General's Office also tried to maintain a separate index for seamen, but it is very incomplete. The "obituaries" are a file of newspaper clippings or other memorials regarding the death of Maine veterans; it is very incomplete as are the General Law Pension records. The second section, "Records Unique" to a particular regiment pretty much speaks for itself. The clothing books are simply a register of each item of clothing issued to a recruit. The Post Office Addresses are the result of a late 19th century-early 20th century effort by the Adjutant General's Office to keep track of the whereabouts of all surviving veterans. It seems to have been maintained until about 1920, and is very incomplete. Also included in this category are gift items that have been donated to us.
