Navies of the Civil War
The Civil War marked the end of the production of wooden battleships, because after ironclad warships were made, everybody saw the advantage that the ironclads had in battle, and the United States has never built another wooden battleship since. The first battle between two ironclad ships was between the USS Monitor (Union) and USS Merrimac (Confederate) at Hampton Roads, Virginia. After firing at each other for two hours, neither ship really damaged the other too bad, so the Confederate ship retreated. This battle made the Confederates think of new ways to disable the new ironclads. One of these ways was to build a hand-cranked submarine, and have it attack the blockade. Another technique used against the blockade, were blockade-runners, small, fast ships that sat low in the water and were painted gray for camouflage.
Different battle techniques were determined by the movement ability of the ship's guns. The Union Navy often used the technique of continuous fire. They would line the ships up, then the first ship would fire its gun, and then the next and so on. They also used turrets. These were guns mounted on the deck of a ship that could aim its guns in almost any direction. The South had other techniques. The most effective was the use of mines, which were placed all over the water to repel ships from the land. Various shapes and sizes were made, and the charges were enclosed would detonate with seven pounds of pressure.
Although the South had better technology, the North had superior strategy in battles. Three examples of war-determining battles are the battles of New Orleans, Vicksburg, and Mobile Bay. Even before these battles, the North had a plan to blockade the Southern coast and prevent any trade from entering or leaving Southern ports. It was strategic because the South had very few manufacturing and industrial facilities and depended on its cotton trade to secure man-made products. A successful blockade soon slowed the South's ability to conduct war. This is because most of the trade would benefit the Southern army, and without supplies they would have a hard time surviving.
