Famous civil war Ironclad and war Ships.
    http://www.navalships.org/civilwar.html
The young Confederacy succeeded against heavy odds in making something out of almost nothing. The South did not own one vessel capable of being fitted out as a ship of war. The first of a navy that was to contend against the third largest navy in the world, was christened after the first fort to fall into the hands of the Confederacy, the C.S.S. Sumter. more

U.S.S. Casco on the James River, with one turret removed. The USS Monitor
The Monitor was strange in appearance. Confederate sailors described it as a cheese box on a raft. It had no sails, no visible guns, and no smokestack. But when the turret of the Monitor turned around and fired at the Virginia, every naval craft in the world became immediately obsolete.

For all his courage, his sterling character, and selfless commitment to his cause, Patrick Cleburne has not received the commemoration his career and personal bravery deserve. The Patrick Cleburne Society was founded in 1998 to perpetuate his memory through events and seminars commemorating his life and accomplishments. Arguably the best Confederate general in the Army of Tennessee, Cleburne remains virtually unknown to most Americans and many Southerners. Through the Patrick Cleburne Society, we hope to rectify this oversight, and preserve for future generations not only the battlefields where Cleburne’s Division won immortality, but the story of the man who led it. The unit offers enlistment to people of all ages, gender, and races (yes, the U.S. Navy was integrated during and before the Civil War). Interested parties may apply to serve as Sailors, Marines or Civilians, the sole stipulation as regards age being that children under sixteen must be accompanied in their enlistment by a responsible parent or guardian. Throughout the War Between the States, the Federal Navy routinely landed parties of Sailors and Marines ashore on raids, reconnaissance or to aid the regular land forces. These were ad hoc groups comprised of men from the ships of the local squadron. Shore parties varied in size from a single lieutenant who might offer his services as staff officer for the day to an Army general or up to several thousand men as landed to attack Fort Fisher at Wilmington, North Carolina. The USNLP represents a group such as might have been landed from a flotilla of gunboats supporting the Army along one of the many rivers that laced the Confederacy. If you are interested in finding out more about the USNLP, information on membership, subscriptions to the unit newsletter "Beat to Quarters!", information is available on a

We must record the truth as we know it about the war and what led up to it so that others will remember.” Task
Your class will form different groups representing the staffs of newspapers in various cities. Some newspapers will represent the Southern point of view and others will represent the Northern point of view.
Your newspaper staff must research, write and edit a “Commemorative Issue" of your Herald newspaper about the issues, events and people surrounding that critical event called the Civil War by some people, the War Between the States by others. The time period covered by this commemorative issue will be 1850-1865. The newspaper staff members will have various assignments.
You will be using your textbook, library resources, and the Internet to find the information that will help you write your articles. Some specific Internet links have been listed with each assignment. However, you may search any of the
