Report any problems to C.S. Naval Officers Items Frock Coat Shoulder Boards Books about The first Confederate Navy uniforms were in the U.S. Dark Blue, but with the confederate style of rank. The 1862 Confederate regulations called for the uniform to be steel grey, lined with black silk serge. But, they were also seen in medium grey and cadet grey. Shoulder Boards for Executive officers were sky blue edged in black 4" long and 1-3/8" wide with a 1/4" gold bullion border. Passed Midshipmen wore a 4" x 1/2" gold bullion lace stripe on each shoulder. Midshipmen wore no shoulder insignia. Sleeve insignia was represented by a 1/2" wide stripes, separated by 3/8". Executive Officer's had a 3" loop on their top stripe, while civil officer's had no loop. Flag Officers had 4 stripes, Captains 3 stripes, Commanders 2 stripes and Lieutenants had 1 stripe. Masters wore a single 1/4" stripe without the loop. Passed Midshipmen and Midshipmen wore 3 medium sized navy buttons on each sleeve. None Midshipman Passed

The exception is that the ranks of Commodore and above changed their sleeve insignia on January 14, 1865 and the rank of Vice Admiral was added at that time. The ranks of Captain and above changed their shoulder straps in 1866. The coat is made for dark blue wool. Where there is a sleeve braid insignia it is gold bullion.
