Edith Hamilton's Mythology

The work on Greek, Roman (and a little Norse) mythology. So much of our society is based on ancient Greece, and so much of the literary references students will face come from classical mythology. Yes, we are all students of the Greeks. Therefore, it is never too early to study the ancients, and this has a good introduction to all the important gods, goddesses, stories and myths in one place. It even covers the events of the Illiad , the Odyssey , and the Aeneid . A book kids can read, but also that college students and adults looking for crossword puzzle answers will keep coming back to.
The World of Myth

Covers mythology worldwide (and thus has some overlap with Hamilton's Mythology . In our multi-cultural era, one is well-served by some knowledge of the myths and legends outside of the western heritage. Search Now: Send email to g (Back to gTexts main page.)

But above all this book is a fascinating and readable guide to the rich and diverse legends and mythologies of the classical world." The Greek Myths by Robert Graves.

  • Our word myth comes from the Greek word mythos , which has a wide range of meanings. Some of these include "word," "saying," "speech," "tale," "story," "purpose," "plan," "fact," "plot," and "fiction."
Our word hero comes from the Greek word heros. In one of its senses, this term refers to great men who have died and have become protective local divinities through burial in the soil. Through their direct connection to the earth, these heroes defend their homeland during times of crises. Although people could invoke the protective services of these heroes through prayer and sacrifice, the heroes belonged solely to that one place.
An oracle was a priest or priestess who received divine knowledge about future or past events. The term also referred to the often cryptic prophecies received and transmitted by these diviners.
Gaia means both Earth itself and the early goddess of the Earth. Most of the early gods and goddesses have this kind of dual function: as both the personification of a natural object or phenomenon and the deity associated with that object. So Uranus is both the Sky and the early god of the sky. Pontus is the Sea and the god of the sea. Nyx is the Night and the goddess of the night.

The first part of this course is spent learning the major deities and heroes of Greco-Roman mythology. The course then follows a chronological examination (beginning with Greece to the present) of how artists and poets thematically used classical mythology in their works. This review was not begun with hostile intent. But I had to examine the CD of Classical Mythology on a visiting Toshiba 2180CDT, mine not having a CD-ROM drive, and was only able to spend an hour examining it at the time. When two subsequent attempts to look at the program resulted in crashing the visiting Toshiba twice, I took it to a friend's office where it crashed that machine (species not noted) three times. Thus I cannot say that I have examined the CD with the degree of thoroughness or fairness that would make me comfortable, and because I had expected to be able to provide it more attention, my notes are minimal.

Each section contains the citations to the various sources followed by a brief discussion of the content of each source. The discussion contains a letter rating of the works according to their usefulness in the instruction of mythology at the undergraduate level. In spite of its rather narrow scope, it can be very useful to anyone trying to find books on classical mythology. Back to Index

BACK COVER From Abantes to Zninthe, from Athena to Zeus, this invaluable alphabetical guide to the myths of Greece and Rome is the definitive handbook for discovering the true identity of the epic heroes and gods who have found their way into all the great literature of the world. Drawn from original sources and later variants, this comprehensive volume consists of both complete stories and short identifications of the charcters, events, place names, and constellations which compose the rich body of ancient Greek and Roman literature. And for a fuller perspective of this mythological realm, there are maps of the classical world, geneological charts of the great royal lines, and a pronouncing index which gives both English pronunciations and transliterated Greek spellings.
The Meridian Handbook of Classical Mythology will be welcomed by students, teachers, librarians, readers of great literature, and most of all by lovers of good stories.
