Summary of all published reports on mammalian cloning - Somatic cell nuclear transfer (cloning) efficiency - as published) Cloning Which type? Much confusion happens when people see the word "clone" used. Depending on the age of the dictionary, the definition of biological cloning can be:
  • A group of genetically identical individuals descended from the same parent by asexual reproduction. Many plants show this by producing suckers, tubers or bulbs to colonise the area around the parent. A group of genetically identical cells produced by mitotic division from an original cell. This is where the cell creates anew set of chromosomes and splits into two daughter cells. This is how replacement cells are produced in your body when the old ones wear out.

Clinton bars federal funds for human cloning research
March 4, 1997
Web posted at: 11:30 a.m. EST WASHINGTON (CNN) Responding to what he termed the "troubling prospect" of cloning human beings, President Bill Clinton has banned the use of all federal funds for such experiments to allow time for scientists, the government and citizens alike to consider the issue. (305K/27 sec. AIFF or WAV sound) "Any discovery that touches upon human creation is not simply a matter of scientific inquiry," the president said Tuesday at a White House news conference to announce his decision. "It is matter of morality and spirituality as well." Clinton also called on privately funded researchers to voluntarily implement a temporary moratorium on human cloning research "until our bioethics advisory committee and our entire nation has had time to... debate the ethical implications." (190K/17 sec. AIFF or WAV sound) The success of Scottish scientists in cloning a sheep from an adult sheep and the subsequent announcement that Oregon scientists had successfully cloned monkeys from embryos prompted Clinton's decision. No federal funds are currently being put toward human cloning experiments, but the president said he wanted to close possible loopholes in the present law by explicitly banning such funding.

February 24, 1997
Web posted at: 8:50 p.m. EST From Correspondent Ann Kellan ATLANTA (CNN) However difficult the ethical questions, the procedure used to clone Dolly the lamb is not very complicated, according to scientists. (512K/28 sec. QuickTime movie ) - Slide show explanation on how cloning works. In fact, scientists at Scotland's Roslin Institute and other laboratories have previously cloned animals from embryos. What makes Dolly unique is that she was cloned from a single cell of an adult animal. Most experts thought that was impossible, because they believed cells older than the embryonic stage lost the ability to produce a whole animal from a single cell. Here's a short course on how Dolly came about: Scientists took a cell from an adult sheep's udder. They took an unfertilized egg from a second sheep, and removed the part that contains its genetic code. Next, the cell and the egg were zapped with electricity to combine them. The egg began dividing as a fertilized egg would divide, and became an embryo. The embryo was implanted in a third sheep, a surrogate mother, that gave birth to Dolly. Aside from being genetically identical to the sheep that donated the udder cell, Dolly seems normal in every way.

19 European nations sign ban on human cloning
Britain, Germany not among signatories
January 12, 1998 Web posted at: 8:00 p.m. EST (0100 GMT) PARIS (CNN) Nineteen European nations on Monday signed an agreement to prohibit the cloning of humans. Representatives from 19 members of the Council of Europe signed a protocol that would commit their countries to ban by law "any intervention seeking to create human beings genetically identical to another human being, whether living or dead." It rules out any exception to the ban, even in the case of a completely sterile couple. "At a time when occasional voices are being raised to assert the acceptability of human cloning and even to put it more rapidly into practice, it is important for Europe solemnly to declare its determination to defend human dignity against the abuse of scientific techniques," Council Secretary-General Daniel Tarchys said. The text, which is to become a part of the European Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine, would permit cloning of cells for research purposes.

and scary possibilities
February 24, 1997
Web posted at: 3:45 p.m. EST (CNN) The announcement that a team of British scientists had successfully cloned an adult sheep has touched off a new wave of discussion over the ethical implications of such a feat. The achievement announced Sunday by a team of scientists at the Roslin Institute near Edinburgh, Scotland , marks the first time anyone has successfully cloned an adult mammal. "There are a number of genetic diseases for which there is no cure ... and this will enable us to carry out research into the causes of those diseases and perhaps develop method to treat them," Dr. Ian Wilmut of the Roslin Institute said following the announcement. While some scientists hail the cloning as a major breakthrough for research in agriculture, aging, medicine and genetics, others worry what it may portend. If sheep can be replicated, they ask, are humans far behind? Suddenly the stuff of science fiction doesn't seem so fanciful anymore as one considers the possibility of dictators cloning themselves, dead geniuses brought back to life, or beloved family pets resurrected.
Sheep, cattle, pigs ... what next?
