  • First things first! Hold a parents meeting to introduce yourself and to meet the girls and their parents. This is a very good time to explain how you plan to coach the team this season and open up a dialog with the parents on your expectations of the team, the players, the volunteers and the parents. This is the best time to pass around a volunteer signup sheet (a sample form is included in the coaching guide). This is also a good time to have the girls pick a team name.
Promote communication. A good portion of the problems encountered during the season involve miss or poor communication. Putting things in writing is helpful. A short flyer on the jamboree or tournament lets people know when the games are and when they need to show up. Team letters can be used to get information out to everyone also. It advisable to have some sort of phone tree established for the team so information can be relayed to all of the players in a timely manor, and no single person has to make all of the phone calls.
Promote safety first! If it isn't safe we shouldn't be doing it. There are a lot of things that we don't think of until it is too late. Make sure equipment isn't all over the ground that the girls can trip over and fall, or sprain an ankle on. This includes balls, bats, helmets, water bottles, etc.. The batters and base runners must always wear the helmets, even during practice. The reason why the base runners need the helmets is to protect them from being struck by a hit or thrown ball. Make sure the girls know that they are not to throw the ball to someone if that player is not looking at them to receive it. The more this is reinforced, the fewer girls that will get hit by thrown balls.

A parent writes: "Both our son and daughter struggle with learning disabilities and Attention Deficit Disorder. As they struggle so do my husband and I. Communication breaks down into arguments, problems arise in school and among peers, and we are often unsure of how to handle their emotional ups and downs. Any suggestions?"
Children with LD and ADHD present unique challenges and rewards to parents. The vulnerability of a fragile ego, the unthinking behaviors rooted in impulsivity, or the steep decline of emotional meltdowns, can render even the most patient parent looking for tools and techniques to manage their child's unpredictable behaviors.

    Coaching in the Teeball League
The goal of the Teeball program is to teach the kids the basic fundamentals of the game and to have fun while doing it! The first half-hour should be spent teaching the kids how to throw, catch, and field. You may find many of the kids have played very little. If you have an assistant, it may be good to split the kids into two groups to keep their interest. Suggested drill
    • Teach the kids how to hold their glove to catch a ball that is thrown to either side of them or for balls thrown high and low.
Teach the proper mechanics of pitching; you can be the catcher and have the kids' pitch to you.
Have the kids' line up at the pitcher's mound area and hit or throw them ground balls. The can practice throwing the ball to first base.
You can throw them short pop flies so that they can practice their catching. You may want to use a tennis ball during this drill.
Practice hitting off the tee before the game starts. Teach them proper stance and how to hold the bat. You can then have them hit a few balls against the screen.

The last 45 minutes should be spent playing a game with the two teams scheduled. Follow the guidelines as specified in the '

    Coaching in the Major League
There is a noticeable difference in coaching a major league team compared to a rookie or even minor league team. It can be just as much fun for the coaches and the kids, but in order to relax and have fun you need to be prepared
There is more competitiveness and seriousness to the majors. Opposing coaches seem to know a lot more than you and the umpires are not as forgiving as they were in the rookie league. You are expected to know and follow the rules. You and your team will have a much better time and be more successful if your coaching staff is prepared and not trying to hoof it. A few tips to help…
Familiarize yourself with the rules. They are enforced in the majors. Pay particular attention to the substitution rule for this is an area where mistakes are often made.
Get to the field early for games . Get the fielding practice in. Have your team ready for the game. Umpires and opposing coaches hate delays. There are strict rules about this. Make sure your players are there early. Have you batting order planned in advance of the game . You want to trade line-ups about 10 minutes before the game. Don't be trying to write it up at the last minute. You'll feel rushed and miss the fielding practice. Know who your substitutes are in advance, when they will go in and for whom. Your line-up must be presented to the opposing coach with name, uniform number, and position.

coaching tips From The CKTVC Staff. on and off the court as well as with othercoaches, to learn from those more experienced and to teach those who are less.
    http://home.woh.rr.com/tkohl/coaching.htm
Coaching Tips From The CKTVC Staff Communicating Effectively We need to make sure we communicate with our players and parents effectively on and off the court
as well as with other coaches, to learn from those more experienced and to teach those who are less.
Communication is vital to every program's success. 4 Words to Eliminate in Coaching: But - You - Can't - Try One thing to remember when it comes to communicating, the perception of the listener is what eventually determines the outcome, not the intention of the speaker. With just a little effort, we can improve our communication skills, get our point across more effectively, and avoid bruising of those fragile athlete egos along the way. When attempting to deliver constructive criticism, we often sever the construction from the criticism by inserting a but between the two. "That was a great effort, but next time try to get the ball to the setter." All the player remembers is "Next time get the ball to the setter.", thus the praise has been lost. By connecting the two with a more positive twist, both the praise and the instruction are absorbed, "That was a great effort, and next time we'll definitely get a swing on it."

This section of the web site is designed to teach players and help new coaches learn the skills required to play competitive baseball. Below are real experiences from coaching baseball regarding my techniques for fielding, throwing, hitting, base running, and pitch calling, etc. DO WHAT'S RIGHT FOR THE TEAM
The team is a youth age group team. A dad is upset that the coach does not play his son in multiple positions. The dad is upset that the son only plays 60 percent of all defensive innings and the son only plays in the outfield (but the coach bats all). The son, on this team is a left fielder. The coach doesn't worry when he sees a fly ball to left when the son is out there, because the son has plenty experience at left and reads those balls well and makes the catch. The son couldn't throw well at the first practice, and now throws with good form and decent accuracy. The son is still struggling at the plate. The dad doesn't bring the son to most batting practices. The dad gets the son to live games 10 - 15 minutes before the first pitch. Coaches, do what you think is right for the team.

Overview: Young Players Ages 12 to 14
Examining the characteristics of a young player

This sidebar article from Success in Soccer magazine looks at the characteristics of young players ages 12 to 14 and the impact of those characteristics on a coach's training plan.
    The Effective Assistant Coach
    A true partner or simply a "yes-man" or a glorified "go-fer"?

This is a subject that I have rarely seen addressed but which I also consider to be of extreme importance. Many teams have either assistant coaches or co-coaches who end up playing the role of cone-fetcher or, even worse, merely stands around and has no input at all. Serving Balls Early It creates the potential for the attacker to receive with goalward momentum Serving an early ball simply means that, instead of getting the ball out wide, then taking it all the way to the end line before crossing it back out, the ball is sent out wide and served much sooner, so it is served behind the defenders instead of playing in front of them.
