    Someone once suggested it would be interesting to work out what Australia would have to do to liberate the Cocos Islands from an invasion. Since I didn't know much about these islands, I looked up what I could and typed it into this page. The internet domain name ending for Cocos Islands is `.cc'.
    From the `Chambers World Gazeteer', 1988.
    2 separate groups of atolls in the Indian Ocean, 3685 km W of Darwin, Australia;
    an Australian external territory comprising 27 small, flat, palm-covered coral islands with a total land area of 14.2 sq km;
    the main islands are West island (pop 216), which is 10 km in length, has an airport and is mostly occupied by Europeans;
    Home island (pop 363) is occupied by the Cocos Malay community;
    Direction, Horsburgh and South Islands and North Keeling Island all lie 24 km N of the group;
    discovered in 1609 by Captain William Keeling of the East India Company, the islands were settled first in 1826 by Alexander Hare and again in 1827 by John Clunies-Ross, who landed with Malay seamen to exploit the coconut palms;
    in 1857 the islands were annexed to the British Crown;
