Only two of the islands are inhabited - Home Island where the majority of the indigenous Cocos Malay people reside and West Island which houses most of the mainly Australian workers on contract to various government departments. The total population of the two islands is just 600 people.
Few groups in the world today are as little known or understood as the Cocos Malay inhabitants of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Theirs has been a world sealed off from the outsider by geography, history, politics and language. Few outsiders have lived among them and very little has been recorded of their cultural practices and tradition. This tiny society has been held together for eight generations by its very isolation, shared economic endeavor, strong family loyalty, a deep commitment to Islam and a unique version of the old "Trading Malay" language of the East Indies.
Today the cornerstone of Coco Malay society and the focus of each individuals life is the Islamic religion. The Cocos people have been described as Islamic since the first settlement. Throughout the year a large number of ceremonies are held at various houses in the kampong for a wide range of family celebrations. These include : house blessings, welcomes, farewells, boat launchings, remembrances of deceased relatives, circumcisions and other family events. The biggest celebration of the year for the Cocos Malay people is Hari Raya Puasa, the day that marks the end of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan.

A possession of the United Kingdom since 1857, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands were transferred to Australia in 1955. Thus, the Australian flag is flown on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The Cocos (Keeling) Islands is the only permanently populated external Australian territory besides Norfolk Island and Christmas Island . This small island group lies in the Indian Ocean, south of Indonesia , about one-half of the way between Sri Lanka and Australia (2200 km west-northwest of Western Australia ). The two main islands, West Island and Home Island, are coral atolls thickly covered with coconut palms and other vegetation.

Cocos (Keeling) Islands
Population: 632 (July 2002 est.)
Capital: West Island
An Introduction to Cocos (Keeling) Islands There are 27 coral islands in the group. Captain William Keeling discovered the islands in 1609, but they remained uninhabited until the 19th century. Annexed by the UK in 1857, they were transferred to the Australian Government in 1955. The population on the two inhabited islands generally is split between the ethnic Europeans on West Island and the ethnic Malays on Home Island. Map of Cocos (Keeling) Islands ( Location

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Australian Indigenous Geographical Classification (AIGC) aims to provide a geographical standard for the publication of statistics about the Indigenous population of Australia.
The first edition of this classification was produced for the 1996 Census. The classification comprises four levels of geographic units in a single hierarchy, the smallest unit being the Census Collection District (CD). CDs aggregate to form Indigenous Locations (ILOCs) which in turn aggregate to form Indigenous Areas (IAREs) which then aggregate to form the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) Regions (AREGs). At each level of the hierarchical structure, the component spatial units collectively cover the whole of geographic Australia without gaps or overlaps.
AREGs can cross State/Territory borders. For example, the AREG Queanbeyan crosses the borders of New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Jervis Bay Territory (Other Territories).
