What is a Major? A major is the area that you will study in-depth in college. You will take up to two thirds of your classes in that subject. However, your major is only part of your undergraduate studies, as colleges and universities generally require a core curriculum in addition to your major course work. You can choose from hundreds of majorsaccounting to zoologybut which is right for you? Should you choose something traditional or select a major from an emerging area? Perhaps you already know what career you want to have, so you can work backward to decide which major will best help you achieve your goals. If you know what you want to do early, you will have more time to plan your high school curriculum, extracurricular activities, jobs, and community service to coincide with your major. Your selection of a college may also depend upon the college providing a strong academic program in a certain major. Facts and Tips Below is a list of facts and tips that may be helpful when choosing a major More than half of all college freshmen are "undecided" and prefer to get a feel for what's available at college before making a decision

The great thing about college is the hundreds of avenues one can pursue regarding a major. Of course, if you chose a school because of a specific major, then your decision is already made. However, if that isn't the case, you need to look at all of your options. You can choose a career-related major such as engineering, pre-medicine, nursing, teacher education, business or more generalized majors such as english, history or math. To figure out your major, you first have to see what is available and what might fit you. Philosophically speaking......

Introduction to Choosing A College Major
It all begins when you're growing up and people ask you “So what do you want to be when you grow up?” As you enter college the inquiries shift to: “What is your college major?”
“What do you plan to do with your college major when you graduate?”
“Just what are your career plans?”
You feel the pressure. You envy the friends that seem so career focussed. If you are an older individual who has been out of high school for some time, you may feel the added pressure of time constraints, as well as work and family responsibilities. You wonder why choice of a college major and comtemplations about career direction have been such a struggle for you. Are you alone in your struggles? The answer is a resounding ‘ NO ’. It is quite normal to be uncertain about the choice of an academic major and /or career direction at this time. College is a time of exploration and self-discovery. It is a time for opening new doors rather than prematurely closing them.

Choosing a Major
Many students are anxious about choosing their majors. Everyone wants to find the "right" major for them. Most students consider a number of majors before they decide on one. There are a number of ways to make this decision, but you will probably be most successful in and satisfied with your major if you make your decision based on your interests, skills, and values.
This site is not designed to tell you what to major in. After all, this is a decision that only you can make. But this site will give you some guidance in the decision-making process and connect you to resources that can help you make your decision.
In order to make a good decision about your major, you will need information - about yourself, about available majors, and about careers. At this time, which of the following areas do you need to learn the most about?
I want to learn more about myself - my interests, values, personality and abilities.

I want to learn more about careers.

I want to learn about deciding on a major and about majors at the University of Minnesota.

Overview. For many students, choosing a college major is a source ofconcern that can affect their personal, academic, and social lives.
http://www.und.edu/dept/sas/advising/majordeciding.htm
Overview Choosing a Major Choosing a major is one of the most important things you do at college. This section is designed to help you identify a major that will suit your abilities, interests, and goals as you complete your education and develop career plans. WHAT IS A MAJOR? The University of North Dakota has academic colleges that grant undergraduate degrees. The colleges are divided into various departments which offer majors. A major is a set of courses that exposes you to an academic area of study in depth. UND offers more than 150 majors, many with a variety of options available. Refer to the Select an Academic Department or Program. Explore UND on the World Wide Web at http://www.und.nodak.edu for more information. WHEN SHOULD I DECLARE A MAJOR? The University of North Dakota does not require students to declare a major at any particular point in their college career. Students can declare a major at any time. Declaring a major does not mean that you are formally admitted to that major. Some colleges and departments have established additional requirements for those seeking admission into their area. THE PROCESS OF CHOOSING A MAJOR You will benefit by using a process to select a major, even if you think you already know what you want to major in. Many students who began UND "knowing" what they wanted, later found they had not explored all their options carefully and had not made good choices. Many times this could cost you time and money. So, if you know what you want, or if you're finding it a challenge to narrow down your interests to a single major, or if you just aren't sure which major is for you, begin by thinking about yourself. Who are you? What are you good at? What do you like to do? Where do you want to be in ten years?

You may be entering college with a clear idea of what major you will choose and which senior institution you plan to attend. But, if you are like many students, you may not know where you will transfer or what your major will be. Several freshman-level core courses are available that will apply toward most majors. During the first semester, you should investigate your interests. By the second or third semester students should begin to develop a clear sense of which senior institution you will attend and the requirements for your chosen degree program. Working closely with a counselor or advisor, and using current information from four-year institutions, you should follow the Associate in Arts / Associate in Sciences Degree plan because many of the required courses are often required at four-year institutions. The counseling personnel at each of the DCCCD colleges can help you develop a degree plan for almost any major.
Listed below are some of the four-year majors students can begin in the DCCCD: Accounting Marine Biology Advertising Marketing Agriculture Mathematics American Studies Medical Technology Anthropology *Medicine Architecture Meteorology Art Microbiology Biological Science Music Botany Music Education Business Administration Nursing Chemistry Occupational Therapy Computer Science Oceanography Dance Optometry Dental Hygiene

Earning a B.S. or B.A. degree in college requires selecting a major and there are advantages in doing this early. Terms such as premed or pre dental are only descriptive labels since Florida Sate University does not award any pre health degrees. Health profession schools understand the importance of applicants having a strong foundation in the natural sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics and these schools have established course requirements for admission to their programs. Usually, these science requirements represent about one-third of the credit hours needed for graduation. In truth, graduate health programs don’t care what students choose to major in because they believe the essential skills necessary in becoming a good practitioner can be obtained through a variety of academic disciplines.
Students can use two criteria to help select a major:
Select a major that you are interested in; something which would be a backup plan if you are not successful in getting into medical or dental school etc.

Choosing a Major
Did you know...
  • It's all right to be undecided. (Most students change majors at least once during their college career.) People change careers (not just jobs, but career fields) on an average of more than three times during their working years. Many career fields don't require a specific major, and people with specific majors don't have to use them in the ways most commonly expected. Many college majors don't offer specific preparation for a single type of work, but can enable you to become anything you want to be. Choice of major is only one factor in determining your future job prospects and career path. Electives or extra-curricular activities and leadership potential are often as important as grades or majors to a prospective employer.
The relationship between college majors and career fields varies. Some fields, such as teaching and engineering, require certification or special training, but many fields do not. The world is full of pre-med lawyers, investment brokers with psychology degrees, and entrepreneurs who majored in history.
