Choosing a Major Most college students think an academic major exists for each specific career field, and that it is impossible to enter most career fields unless they choose a matching major for undergraduate study. This is not true! The relationship of college major to careers varies. Obviously, some career choices dictate that you choose a specific undergraduate major. If you want to be a nurse, you must major in nursing. Engineers major in engineering. Architects major in architecture. There is no other way to be certified as a nurse, engineer, or architect. However, most career fields don't require a specific major, and people with specific majors don't always have to use them in ways most commonly expected. Most colleges don't offer specific preparation for a single type of work. Instead, they provide abroad education so that you can develop a variety of career options. Your awareness of the relationship between career fields and college majors can play a vital part in your choice of academic major, minor, and electives.

Strategies for Finding your Major
Whenever you want to, meet with a trained advisor from College Academic Services who can help you explore your options and develop a plan that meets your interests. General Education courses can be a good way to explore possible areas of interest, and make contact with a particular department. All G.E.s are taught by tenured faculty. If you are enrolled in G.E. classes you like, make an appointment with the professors during office hours to discuss your major or minor options. If you're one of the hundreds of new freshmen each year enrolled in a Learning Community, you will benefit from a small community of faculty and fellow students who will extend your research into majors during your first semester. By taking Freshman Seminars you can explore a new area of academic life. Freshman Seminars are small classes led by distinguished professors who are invited to teach subjects they find especially intriguing or provocative. You earn two units on a credit/no credit basis. No prior knowledge of the subject matter is expected.

Undergraduate Engineering Degrees Choosing a Major Dual Degrees Special Programs Minors Program Advisors ... Honors Programs Whereas the entering first-year student does not need to select a specific field of engineering, there is some advantage to arriving at a decision early. To help the student with a choice, the departments will schedule a series of group meetings that provide information about each of the programs and related career opportunities. If additional help is needed, the student should consult with an academic or program advisor . The degree program in which a student plans to graduate should be selected during the second term. Admission to a degree program depends on the student being in good standing and having completed the first-year-student-level mathematics, chemistry, physics and digital computing courses. Transfer to a program involves obtaining the necessary approval forms from the degree program office selected. In addition, the Executive Committee of the College of Engineering, following a request of a particular degree program, may find it necessary to restrict admission to that program, based on grade point averages in mathematics, chemistry, physics and digital computing courses elected in the first year.

Establishing a Credential Folder Choosing a Major Students sometimes have difficulty selecting a college major. It's important to understand that some career fields (e.g., nursing, accounting) do require a particular course of study while other fields require only that a person have a college degree. Most employers do not hire majors, they hire individuals who have a set of skills appropriate to the job and who demonstrate interest in that field. Generally, a good choice of major is one you would enjoy and do well in. To help you decide on a major, vocational testing, available in Career Services, may help. Undeclared students should also be in contact with the University Advising Center , also found in Hood House.

When should I declare a major? When you are ready. By the end of winter term of your sophomore year, at the latest. Ideally, during spring term of the freshman year, before summer holidays. Science students, though undeclared, must take mathematics and (usually) general chemistry in the freshman year. Postponing foundation classes such as mathematics and foreign languages extends the time it takes to earn a degree in some majors, so, be careful. How do I go about choosing a major?

96. Undeclared Student Advising

UNDECLARED STUDENTS AND THE OFFICE OF ACADEMIC ADVISING: HOW CAN WE HELP YOU? The Office of Academic Advising serves students who have not yet decided on an academic major. One of the primary purposes of Academic Advising is to assist undeclared students in the development of meaningful educational plans that are compatible with their life goals and to offer workshops and referrals to assist students in choosing a major. We encourage you to explore your interests with an adviser and carefully review official information that can be found in the University of Oregon Catalog and Schedule of Classes The Office of Academic Advising is a place where students can sit down with an adviser one-on-one and discuss their individual concerns and questions. Students will receive personalized academic information and support and can call or come in as often as needed. Also, check out what other students have to say about the UO.
