This Boyacá town 45 kilometers from Tunja was founded in 1539 by don Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada. It is considered to be one of the department’s most attractive tourist sites, for its thermal springs offer tourists the choice of health.
The department of Boyacá is situated in the Eastern Cordillera, in central-eastern Colombia. The complex topography of the area gives it a range of temperatures from below zero to thirty-five degrees centigrade. Bursting with history, the department has been the emblem of Colombian culture. The Muiscas –a pre-Colombian culture that inhabited the land of the Boyacenses—were already working the emerald mines before the arrival of the Spaniards, who chose this site as the receptacle for their culture and traditions.

The house swarmed with people as the warm smells of delicious food wafted through the air and the Colombian dancers took their places. Guests waited impatiently for the Taste of Colombia to begin, a night of food, culture, dancing and fun.
La Casa Cultural Latina sponsored Taste of Colombia Monday night, an event that was supposed to help students learn more about Colombian culture. About every three months, La Casa Cultural Latina hosts a Latin country night, introducing students to various Latino cultures. Each year, about five cultural nights are held; in the past, La Casa has hosted countries such as Argentina, Chile, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Venezuela.
Most students said they were there to get something good to eat and learn a little, too.
Juan Rosales, senior in LAS, agreed.
Although many students think La Casa Cultural Latina events are exclusively for Latino students, Caballero said everyone is welcome.
Non-Latino participants, such as Hadeel Assali, senior in LAS, attended Taste of Colombia to learn more about Latino cultures.

The difference lies in how they address the uniqueness of Colombian culture. NARRATIVE BIOGRAPHY The main research projects I developed at the time were all inspired by Latin American scholars. Based on Paulo Freire's theories on communication and education, I conducted several projects on participatory media, participatory research and action research. Alternative media became my main research area. I edited a book that documents four cases of participatory communication and/or action research in Colombia; this text, published in 1987 is called (Telling Stories, Weaving Identities: Case Studies on Popular Communication ). (The Colombian Telenovela: Much More than Love and Tears). In 1988 I came to the United States to further pursue my studies. I graduated from Ohio University with a M.A. in Communication and International Development (1990) and a Ph.D. in International Telecommunications (1994). Three different yet related research interests guided my graduate studies: first, critical analysis of mass media texts (with an emphasis on feminist scholarship); second, alternative media and democratization of communication; and third, communication and Third World development. My doctoral dissertation is a comparative analysis of four case studies of alternative media, which I rather call citizens' media. In 1991 I interrupted my graduate studies for a year; the Universidad Centroamericana at Managua, Nicaragua had invited me to join their communication faculty as visiting professor. There I taught mass communication courses (theory, research, media criticism) and conducted research on alternative media and participatory communication.

This page is a jumping off point into the
    Music of Colombia
It is intended to provide the listener with samples of music that are part of traditional Colombia. (e.g., No Bluegrass or Rock and Roll.) "Traditional Colombian music has roots that correspond to the same regional divisions of numerous other facets of Colombian society and culture. In the interior highland, traditional music includes the bambuco , the pasillo , and the guabina . On the western coast, the currulao , the contradanza , and the bamboleo are the traditional forms. The joropo and the galerón have the same role in the llanos (plains). In the Costa, the vallenato, cumbia, porro, bullerengue, mapalé, garabato, puya and fondongo are the most representative musical forms." Culture and Customs of Colombia , Raymond Williams, Kevin Guerrieri, Greenwood Press, 1999, pg.73 The most widely known musical forms are: The Vallenato is an extremely popular Afro-Colombian music originating from Valledupar, the capitol of the Caribbean department of El César. From the 1930's, troubadours from this region spread their quick tempo accordian music. The song form modulated with the times, taking on a mild rock rhythm for dancing. Today it is popular throughout the Hispanic world. The Cumbia is another Afro-Colombian rapid beat. These are typically light hearted love songs.
