Apollo is a unique charter school program open to gifted students
ages 6-18 (traditionally defined as grades 1-12)  whose academic and/or intellectual abilities require differentiated educational programs. No less than learning disabled students, highly gifted students require specially trained instructors and a course of instruction appropriate to their actual capabilities.  Apollo is open to students who score in the top 2% in one of several accepted tests. The Apollo Charter School is dedicated to meeting the needs of these students throughout Denver, and will accept applications from students throughout Colorado. Apollo's charter will enable the school to open its doors in September of 2001. Our charter is approved for grades 1-8; pending approval of our high school curriculum,  Apollo will also serve students in traditional grade 9 at that time. (As noted in the curriculum, Apollo does not use age-based grades but groups children by subject mastery and ability.) LOCATION At this point there are two likely sites for Apollo: at 825 Ivanhoe, Denver, CO 80220; and 2600 Leyden St, Denver, CO 80207. Both of these are churches with extra rooms they are willing to rent to us.

http://www.colorado.edu/CDSS/MSD/
The Magnet School of the Deaf has been renamed. Our new name is the Rocky Mountain Deaf School. RMDS provides a bilingual education for Deaf Children. Being visually oriented makes English seem like a foreign language for Deaf children. Since American Sign Language is a visual language, it's a Deaf child's natural language. It provides a child with a rich language foundation to think, learn, and play. American Sign Language, or ASL, provides your child access to the word of communication. But teaching your Deaf child English is also important. In addition to being your child's natural language, ASL is a stepping-stone into learning English. Having a solid first language helps English make sense. The Rocky Mountain Deaf School emphasizes access to communication, academics, and English literacy. The Benefits of a charter schoo l The Rocky Mountain Deaf School was developed by parents, the Deaf community, and educational professionals who saw the need for a school that acknowledges a bilingual education as essential to learning. We welcome involvement and input from both Deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Our School Board reflects this philosophy.

CFNN DIRECTOR’S EDITORIAL COMMENT: This issue of CFNN’s “Accountability Update” references a number of studies that have been released lately that track charter school student performance in comparison to district school student performance. Information on these studies is being provided because it’s important for charter advocates to know what’s being reported and, in general, how the question, “How are charter schools are doing?” is being asked and answered.

    What the Law Says
Minnesota law does not require you to develop a plan. However, most developers have found it very useful to have a written plan showing major tasks to be accomplished, who is responsible, and timelines.
    What Other Developers Say
    Top of page
In his Charter School Development Guide Schools are complex entities exposed to tremendous pressure. They depend on a strong, solid construction, quality materials, and support mechanisms. If one spoke on a bicycle wheel breaks, the entire wheel can spring out-of-true, sending the rider into the pavement. ...This complex and interdependent system requires a comprehensive design plan. Such a plan starts with the clear and commonly understood beliefs about education and learning. An effective plan also addresses critical, if seemingly mundane, matters such as governance, administration, budgets, finance and similar matters. In order to get your planning process started, we have provided a comprehensive list of school design elements that will need to be addressed (found at the end of this section). This list also provides space for you to indicate when work in a certain area will be completed and by whom. The list is long and covers a wide range of topics. Just remember the reason you wanted to start a school - your educational vision - and that there is a lot information available to assist you as you work through the list. There is one planning grant available through the Walton Family Foundation based in Colorado. For more information on this grant, see the
