In a few instances, significant articles published prior to 1989 are included. Suggestions for additional articles and corrections of citation errors are welcomed. I vy Baldwin. 1866-1953.
Born William Ivy, Baldwin changed his name so he and a circus partner could bill themselves as brothers. He joined the circus at the age of eleven and became a balloonist, parachutist, and high wire walker. As a main attraction at the opening of Elitch Gardens in 1890, Baldwin stunned the crowd with his act.
A balloonist in the Spanish-American War, he also served in WWI. Other accomplishments include being the first in Colorado to fly a powered aircraft of his own design and construction. Baldwin is credited with Colorado's first amphibian take-off in his pusher plane from Denver's Sloans Lake.

"The Constitution explicitly provides for the unfettered profession of religious and other beliefs in private and in public, and the Government respects these rights in practice. No person can be compelled to admit his religious or other beliefs. There is no state religion. About 70 percent of the population adheres to the Roman Catholic faith, and 25 percent to the Orthodox. NEWS RELEASE February 18, 2003
Colorado Joins 21 States, Industry Leaders, Statesmen
and Former Military Leaders in Support of
Michigan Admissions Programs
Colorado filed a friend of the court brief in support of the University of Michigan along with the following states: Arizona; California; Connecticut; Illinois; Iowa; Maine; Maryland; Massachusetts; Minnesota; Montana; New Mexico; New York; North Carolina; Oklahoma; Oregon; Rhode Island; Vermont; Washington; West Virginia; Wisconsin. New Jersey will file its own brief. Regents of the University of California v. Bakke The Michigan admission programs focus intensively on the individual merits of each applicant to the school, and emphasize how each individual might contribute in the classroom and to campus life. Ethnicity is one factor considered in this examination of the applicant. It is weighed to build a student body that reflects a diversity of race and ethnicity, in the same way factors are weighed to build a diversity of geographic, academic, family and subject matter interests, among other concerns. The states tell the Supreme Court that a diverse student body in public universities is a compelling government interest. Just as geographic diversity exposes students to the range of experiences associated with growing up in different places, exposure to an ethnically diverse student body exposes students to the range of experiences and ideas attendant to living as an ethnic minority in this country. As significantly, this diversity also teaches students the important lesson that a very broad range of ideas exist within any single group of individuals.

6.17 Compare the military career fields with those found in the civilian job market.
6.18 Compare the military life-style with your projected career life-style. The branches of the military service are the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps. Military service offers advantages such as achieving physical fitness, meaningful employment, economic security, education and training, job experience, and a variety of broadening experiences including travel, adventure, and friendships. The military also demands sacrifice, hardship, frequent separations from family, constant relocations, the requirement to be on call 24 hours a day, the structure of military discipline, and the inherent dangers of military operations. All of these liabilities are the price service people pay in exchange for the opportunities the military provides.

Was an Indian Boarding School from 1891-1911 Click on the timeline to move through Indian School History Fort Lewis was deactivated and turned over to the Secretary of the Interior for an Indian School. After Lewis Morgan was named Superintendent, the school opened with 51 children enrolled. Tribes represented Navajo, Ute, Sioux and Apache. The boarding school taught grades kindergarten through 6th grade. In addition to teaching the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic, its mission was an industrial training school (agriculture, home economics, carpentry). The children were assimilated and trained to accept the culture of America. The use of Indian names and wearing of native attire were discouraged. Therefore students took names of notable American leaders (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, etc.) The old military hospita l was converted to a girls dormitory. Return to Top C.C. Duncan, United States Indian Inspector, reported that 65 acres was being cultivated by the school. During the year it produced 18 tons of oat hay, 17,350 pounds of potatoes, 200 pounds of turnips, 2973 pounds of onions, 240 pounds of beans and 2700 pounds of other vegetables. The school also owned 7 horses, 4 swine, and 36 domestic fowl. Thomas Breen was named Superintendent in 1894 and served until August 1903. Dr. Breen ran the school much like a military post. The members dressed in uniforms and performed military drill and parade every Sunday.

DAVID HUGHES WROTE MANY LETTERS DURING HIS 13 MONTHS IN KOREA
Most were to his mother in Denver, Colorado. He was close and deeply devoted to his mother; his father had died when David was six years old. His grandmother and grandfather were Welsh immigrants from Wales, in the British Isles. They had settled in Colorado in the 1880's. David's father was one of five children. Dave Hughes was an only son. He had three sisters, two older, and one younger. His father had been a retail food salesman who traveled up and down the "front range" on the east side of the Rocky Mountains, between Walsenburg in the south, and Boulder, north of Denver. David often traveled with his dad on sales trips, and remembered dancing on counter tops while singing "Home on the Range" for his dad's customers. After his father's death, the family moved to Denver, where his mother could more easily find employment. His dad's sister-in-law, David's aunt and uncle were successful, well connected, and influential. His aunt and uncle had no children of their own. David's aunt helped support him when he attended the Colorado Military School in Denver, where he fit well in the disciplined life of a young cadet. His aunt, became an important influence in Dave's life. It was as a boy in the Colorado Military School, during World War II, that he learned of West Point. Eventually he secured a principle appointment from Senator Milliken of Colorado - with the assistance and intervention of David's aunt.

Where do Mancos graduates go? From the Mancos High School Blue Jay Chronicle, January, 2001
By: Rachel Russell, junior Where did last year's seniors go? The Mancos High School senior class of 2000 found themselves spread out across Colorado, and a few are attending out-of-state schools. More of last year's seniors found a niche with nearby Fort Lewis College in Durango than with any other school. Six from the latest graduating class are attending Fort Lewis this semester. Of the 37 students that graduated in 2000, 69 percent went on to attend some type of post-secondary education. Three students attended the San Juan Basin Technical school and four went to out-of-state schools. None of our students entered the armed forces last year. Of the remainder of the class, most of the graduates went to work instead of going to school. Most of the graduates preferred small schools to larger schools. In addition to the six graduates at Fort Lewis, 17 students attend smaller schools including: the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS), Western State College in Gunnison and Adams State College in Alamosa. Only five students attend large schools such as: Colorado State University, Brigham Young University and the University of New Mexico.
