A multi-instrumentalist who broke into sound-for-picture by scoring B horror movies, Koz founded HUM in 1996, wisely locating the company in what has become Santa Monica, Calif.'s, thriving media and post-production district. But whether your frame of reference is literally the Copland-Sessions Concerts of Contemporary Music , a four-season project from 1929-1932 where American composers first took charge of bringing their music to the public, or the broader history of that tradition stretching back to Bach and Beethoven, the very breadth of composer-led or -affiliated ensembles is American to the core. Since colleges and conservatories are the easiest places for composers and performers to interact, it's no surprise that ensembles that met there (like Musicians Accord eighth blackbird and the California EAR Unit ) often continue the association after graduation. The members of other more experimentally-oriented groups, like Essential Music Newband , or the American Festival of Microtonal Music , have found each other far from the halls of academe. Once embarking on this mission, ensembles have a choice in what they perform. They can largely support a certain compositional school (

Help! New Music Service Organizations Answer the Call By Karissa Krenz
Karissa Krenz
photo by Melissa Richard usic abounds more than ever these days. On any given night you can hear any type of music in the concert hall, on the web, on the radio (and of course, on your stereo). One might think that in these technologically-advanced days, it is easy for a composer to get his or her music out there. But the music world is such a confusing placewho's out there to help composers? There are so many composers, so many legalities they need to know, and so little money to go around. How are artists supposed to learn what they need to know, promote their music, and continue composing? Luckily, there are a number of service organizations out there set up to help composers wade through the muck of the music industry. On top of the list are the performing rights organizations, ASCAP and BMI . Both protect composers' rights and ensure that composers receive payment for performances. In addition, the organizations assist in the commissioning process, work with other organizations to encourage commissioning, help composers network, advise artists on how to support themselves through their music, and serve as advocates for new music and composers. That's where all of these service organizations step in.

COMPOSERS Robert Boyd Robert Boyd, therapist, teacher and composer of " Mindshower: The Sound of Light " and other original works too numerous to mention, is an important and fascinating figure in the field of music therapy for both humans and animals! A mature composer whose work is by turns gentle, soothing, nostalgic and moving, Robert is an articulate musician who is best left to describe his own practice and approach: "I have spent almost a life time in the research and application of musical vibration and its effect on living matter. My recordings are all made on electronic keyboards and played live. They are not sequenced or computer produced, as is the case with most producers of ambient music. The music contains no subliminal voice or electronic additives. It is purely performed music and carries all the emotions of the moment in which it is composed and performed." Robert has pioneered what he has called BIOLOGICAL HARMONICS , his application for music for animals both domestic and rural, devising unique methods and techniques in using sounds to enhance the well-being of animals. Robert also composes music for specific conditions and ailments, such as insomnia, autism and stress-related disorders, as well as specially created meditation music for the serious seeker. His music has been used by the terminally ill and in doctors surgeries, health clinics, dental clinics, hospitals and homes for the aged. Robert also composes music for specific individuals, usually after a person-to-person interview. Individual patients using Robert's personal music and relaxation techniques have shown remarkable improvement and recovery in stress related problems. Robert can be contacted

a timely response when their requests are to fulfill such specific projects.composers need permission before beginning the task of writing the music.
http://www.ascap.com/concert/tips.html
american society of composers, authors and publishers
TIPS FOR FACILITATING COMPOSER REQUESTS
  • Text Selection and Permissions Composers choose inspiring contemporary texts which best express their own sensibility and which are appropriate for a specific musical purpose or occasion. Setting texts to music exposes wider audiences to the unique contributions of talented writers and poets.
  • Normal music uses When permission to set text to music is requested, the non-exclusive uses composers usually seek are:
  • Permission to set the music to the text.
  • Permission to assign the musical work to a music publisher or to self-publish the musical work.
  • Deadline Constraints Composers freqently write on commission with deadlines, and so appreciate a timely response when their requests are to fulfill such specific projects. Composers need permission before beginning the task of writing the music. If a premiere performance is scheduled, the musicians require the finished music in time to learn and properly rehearse it prior to public performance.
  • Composer Responsibilities When Permission Is Granted
  • To assure the publisher that all income be divided appropriately between the writer and composer, and to make sure that the publisher receives whatever royalty or permission fee is specified in the contract.

Posted by Peter Gilbert on January 15, 19103 at 00:09:04: Hello,
I wanted to let you know about a new program for young composers (generally ages 15-19 but we can be flexible) at the Cleveland Institute of Music. The program is July 13-19, 2003. We're very excited about what we have to offer the students. There's more specific info about the program below which can be forwarded to interested students. Also, the website has info and application forms: http://www.cim.edu/specProgYngComp.php  Best wishes - hope to see many of you apply!
    Peter Gilbert
http://petergilbert.net THE YOUNG COMPOSERS PROGRAM AT CIM The Young Composers Program at CIM will take place July 13-19 at the Cleveland Institute of Music. The program will have classes in compositional craft, individual and small-group lessons with the faculty, and listening sessions where we discuss great musical repertoire of the past 50 years. The centerpiece of the program is the preparation, public performance, and CD recording of a work by each student. Each student will work with the YCP Ensemble (a professional ensemble comprised of flute, violin, cello, and piano) to prepare the performance of his or her piece, with coaching from the faculty. The faculty will include Peter Gilbert, Orianna Webb and Dr. Margaret Brouwer, head of CIM"s composition department.
This is a wonderful opportunity for young composers to get a lot of exposure to new music, some insight into how they can continue to grow, and a terrific performance of their music, plus get tools that will be helpful with college or conservatory applications in composition. The program packs a lot of activities into a just week, making it quite affordable compared to other similar programs.

    • Instructors: This course will cover analysis and synthesis of sounds based on spectral and physical models. Models and methods for synthesizing real-world sounds as well as musical sounds will be presented. The course will be organized into morning lectures covering theoretical aspects of the models, and afternoon labs. The morning lectures will present topics such as Fourier theory, spectrum analysis, the phase vocoder, digital waveguides, digital filter theory, pitch detection, linear predictive coding (LPC), high-level feature extraction, and various other aspects of signal processing of interest in sound applications. The afternoon labs will be hands-on sessions using SMS , the Synthesis ToolKit in C++ , Matlab, and other software systems and utilities. Familiarity with engineering, mathematics, physics, and programming is a plus, but the lectures and labs will be geared to a musical audience with basic experience in math and science. Most of the programs used in the workshop will be available to take home.
