Books About Music
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this section of Classical Net is to provide an overview of recommended books and scores, with links to facilitate on-line purchase through Amazon.com , a leading on-line retailer. Though we have made every effort to include current information, books go in and out of print all the time, and they may change ISBN designations between editions, making it difficult to ensure that all links are operative at all times. Some recommended books are currently out-of-print, but are still included as they may be available in local libraries or through used book sellers. We welcome feedback, suggestions, additions, and corrections to this information.

Why Study Music?
Music touches the lives of every citizen of the world. To study music is to study creative expression through your personal voice: performing and composing, or through investigating expression made by others: music history, ethnomusicology, and music education. Studying music is studying your own culture and other cultures throughout the world. It is studying history, leaning about other forms of expression, and beginning a lifelong involvement in the arts. Most of all, studying music is discovering your own creative mind. Students who have both a strong interest and a good background in music are encouraged to audition to be music majors. The music industry offers many career opportunities to graduates who can compete effectively in this challenging field. Music study also has been proven to be a strong foundation for other professional endeavors. Outstanding graduates in music are sought after for their ability to concentrate, to organize, to analyze problems, to set and achieve goals, to collaborate with others, to follow directions, and to perform publicly. All of these skills transfer from the musical arena to other areas of study. The self-discipline and motivation that characterize successful musicians are highly prized qualities in industry and the professions as well.

1. To maximize use of data space, more than 300 of the well-known composers were identified by their initials in the index that immediately follows. Since we used initials for composers in the already published first volume of this work (1898-1925), there are some cases in which the initials used in the first volume for a specific composer were given to another composer for this new work. We list the following cases, with the first name being from the first volume, and the second name corresponding to the new work. This change should not be terribly confusing since the periods covered are different, aside from the fact that in the first volume most of the abbreviations refer to performers and not composers. The composers in question are Romeu, Faílde, Puig, Valdés-Torres, Maury, Marín Varona, and López. All composers with abbreviations are Cuban unless there is a nationality abbreviation in parenthesis after the name. For example: Alvaro Carrillo (me), is from Mexico.

Walter Aaron Clark (University of Kansas)
Leonora Saavedra (University of Pittsburgh) Are there specific techniques and aesthetic stances that connect Iberian and Latin American composers over time and throughout the large geographic regions they inhabit? And what roles have religious patronage and political ideology played in shaping common manifestations of Hispanic musical culture? Each participant in the session will address these issues by examining a specific aesthetic tendency in relation to a particular historical era and determined geographical region. The session will include discussion of whether or not this approach has been viable throughout long periods of history or during specific times of need and will endeavor to draw cross-cultural comparisons. Of particular concern is the dependence of Hispanic musicians on fragile economic infrastructures. The economic insecurity of being a composer in Iberia or Latin America is one basic factor shared by many composers of different times and places. In an overview of the session, Grayson Wagstaff will explore themes of religious patronage in the Spanish Catholic Church and their specific effect on the chant style of Renaissance music. During the years of Ferdinand and Isabella and their Habsburg successors, both the Crown and the Church shaped Hispanic musical manifestations. Walter Clark's presentation will contribute to our knowledge of Hispanic musical culture of the twentieth century, as political and commercial enterprises appropriated the patronage functions previously assumed by religious institutions. Leonora Saavedra will focus on Mexico of the early twentieth century, as she examines the role that Education Minister José Vasconcelos played in shaping national identity. Through the preferred sponsorship of visual media and the promotion of hybridized genres such as the

Music Time Periods Which time period should be featured in "The Museum of Music History"? Introduction Task Process Resources ... Conclusion Introduction
The Society of Western Music has established "The Museum of Music History". They are looking for a time period to be featured as the opening exhibit. Each of the historic time periods offers much for the museum, but a committee of specialists in each time period is trying to get theirs featured. These specialists will use facts about composers in their time and the significance of the changes in music to prove that their time period is the most important of all. Task
Students will be grouped into committees of 3 members. Each of the 3 members will have a specific aspect to research pertaining to your time period. After researching your given time period you will organize your ideas into a presentation so that you can persuade the museum curator to choose your time period for the opening exhibit. The final presentation may be in the form of a skit, a puppet show, a TimeLiner presentation, or a PowerPoint presentation. Remember, you must have a legitimate argument by showing the importance of music in your time period, and how it affects modern life as we know it.
Process
1. Students will be divided into committee groups of 3. Each student then will be assigned to a specific aspect of your time period to study. Those aspects are: composers, instruments, and non-musical significant items.

Recording Agreement Helpful Information Any Recording Agreement is a formidable document which even the most experienced music business attorney will find difficult to comprehend on a first reading. This summary has been prepared as a general explanation of recording agreements and does not explain any specific agreement. I do hope that this explanation will enable you to read any agreement with some basic understanding of all details involved and will prompt you to ask questions on the specific agreement with which you're involved. 1. Before the agreement
Most groups have probably been working together for a while before they actually sign an agreement. All financial records related to expenses and income should be kept from day one. They should also be made available to the groups accountant as soon as possible. The accountant can then establish the fact that the group has had trading years before they signed agreements which may be advantageous from a tax point of view, because it's better if substantial advances do not come in the groups first year of trading. This should be discussed at an early stage with an accountant. 2. Duration of the agreement

An on-line application form and Prospectus can be found on their web site. The general admission procedure for the School of Graduate Studies, as well as a listing of supporting documentation are to be found in the University Calendar under the heading General Information and Regulations Governing All Graduate Students. Please consult this information for full details. Admission to the M.Mus. degree programs in the School of Music is further determined by audition and diagnostic examinations. Candidates for admission will normally hold a B.Mus. degree with first class standing from a recognized university. Applicants with other types of preparation should enquire with the School regarding the likelihood of admission. The School requires the submission of a current curriculum vitae, a complete repertoire list, and a written statement of objectives in pursuing the Master's degree. Auditions for September entry will normally be held in February of each year at the School's St. John's campus. Later dates can be arranged if circumstances warrant and if places are available. The audition may be submitted as an audio or video recording if in-person audition is an impossibility. Recordings must be of professional calibre; audio recordings in DAT or CD formats only. The audition will normally be the equivalent of a full-length solo recital (ca. 50 - 60 minutes performing time) in the performance medium. The program should display a range of performance styles and repertoire. All candidates are encouraged to include some repertoire composed within the last fifty years. An interview with the School's graduate admissions committee will be scheduled to coincide with the audition.

Laws should apply on-line as they do off-line with the central regulatory mechanism being competition legislation. In addition to competition law, specific rules on such matters as media concentration, open access to the new delivery systems and technical standards may be necessary. Flexibility in an Evolving World
In the main we agree with the Government's view that there is an overarching need for flexibility and fluidity in approach both to regulation and regulatory structures. The pace of technological and commercial developments and resulting lack of certainty as to the nature of the emerging marketplace demands flexible regulatory approaches which are not technologically specific, nor sector specific and not over-burdensome. A Light Regulatory Touch
British Music Rights concurs with the Government's broad principle of taking only those measures that are necessary to protect the public interest and the interests of consumers. Leading-edge creative and technological businesses in the music and entertainment sectors are mainly SMEs and would be the first to suffer in an over-regulated environment. Innovation, investment and competitiveness in these key industries would be jeopardised, undermining the Government's fundamental aim of ensuring that the UK remains a world leader in the provision of communication services.

The history of the inter-war labour movement in Britain had an endless, eclectic musical accompaniment. There were sentimental and comic ballads at social events, socialist hymns at meetings and services, massed choirs and full orchestras, soloists with voice and with instruments, dance bands, jazz bands, brass bands and serious composers.
This book concerns itself with the practical use that labour activists made of music in entertaining the comrades, propagating the socialist message and raising funds, as well as the formation of musical organizations and societies within the movement and the special place given to music and song during times of struggle. In so doing it attempts both to sketch a national picture and to offer a more detailed look at the musicality of local areas, focusing on the cities and surrounding districts of Birmingham and Bradford.
The book also examines the intellectual development of labour theories of music. As this period was one of great upheaval and change in both the worlds of labour politics and popular music alike, so important changes in labour music and labour approaches to music can be identified. The Labour Party and its theorists and press are shown to transfer their attentions from the cultural production of music to its consumption: from performance to appreciation. Similarly, they became increasingly keen to accept and respond to popular tastes rather than attempt to shape and transform them. Conversely, over the same period, the Communist Party ceased to view music and the arts as peripheral and became interested in their potential as weapons in the struggle and therefore encouraged more musical production: music of specific genres for specific purposes.

This electronic version of the Second Edition of The Encyclopedia of Music in Canada (1992) is designed to enable musicians, music scholars, students, and music lovers globally to have immediate access to information about music in Canada. It is also hoped that the electronic edition of EMC will reflect Canadian music's richness and diversity. As noted in the introduction to the First Edition, EMC aims to describe Canada's musical heritage and culture in its breadth and depth: the historic and current manifestations of popular, folk, religious, concert, and other forms of music, as well as Canadian music's educational, critical, administrative, and commercial aspects. The evolution and the of the EMC project are discussed more fully in the introductions to the paper-based First and Second Editions. EMC 's electronic edition, presented in both official languages, will continue to be updated on an ongoing basis over the next several years. As the Second Edition attempted to track those trends that had appeared since the original 1981 publication as well as to introduce new musicians and to elaborate on those whose careers had grown, so will this electronic edition carry on where the Second Edition left off. As the electronic format allows the Encyclopedia's editors to make rapid textual changes, new articles will be introduced and contributors to the
