41. Composting With Redworms
An informative how to of home vermiculture.
http://whatcom.wsu.edu/ag/compost/Redwormsedit.htm
Composting with Redworms Many homeowners have some kind of home composting system in operation. However, people living in condominiums, apartments and other residences don’t have a suitable place to start a compost pile. These people feel left out on a worthwhile cause, and need alternative ways to be part of the composting program. There is a solution! Kitchen wastes can be converted to a rich humus with the help of redworms. Children find worms fascinating. They are very well behaved "pets," and also help with household chores! What to Call It It is called a "home vermiculture system" or "worm box system." The system contains
  • A physical structure : a redworm box or container Biological organisms A controlled environment : temperature, moisture, acidity A maintenance program : bedding preparation, food waste burying, separating redworms from compost and using compost
Where to Put It Consider the needs of redworms and needs of the owner. Redworms need controlled temperature, contolled moisture content, controlled aeration and proper pH. Temperature: Redworms tolerate a wide range of temperatures, however, the ideal temperature is between 55 – 77 degrees F. Bedding with a temperature above 84 degrees F. is harmful, sometimes fatal, to redworm populations. The temperature should be measured inside the box, because the temperature in the moist bedding is usually lower than the outside air.

Introduction to Composting
Backyard composting is the most economical way to reduce organic materials going into the landfill while preserving natural resources. Anything growing in your yard is potential compost material. Compost is nature's way of recycling by returning vital nutrients to the soil. Compost is the end product of decomposed organic material like food scraps, grass clippings, leaves, and wood and brush chips. The key to a healthy compost pile is to keep it simple. Reduce - Landscape trimmings can be reduced through simple changes in maintenance procedures. The "Don't Bag It" program, for instance, promotes leaving grass clippings on the lawn after mowing. This helps fertilize your lawn and reduces waste. Major changes, like choosing native or well-adapted plants, can also reduce waste. Reuse - Yard trimmings and food scraps can be composted at home for reuse in landscapes and gardens. Many yard trimmings can be used as mulch to protect the soil, suppress weeds and conserve water. Recycling - Yard trimmings that are difficult to manage at home are collected at the curbside and taken to the City of Austin Hornsby Bend Facility to be composted and processed with sewage sludge to make Dillo Dirt , a popular fertilizer for lawns and gardens.

Making Compost

Making a Compost Column
... Shop or Compare Prices Photo courtesy Karim Nice Home composting is an ideal way to reduce solid waste. Americans generate about 210 million tons (231 million short tons) of trash, or solid waste , each year. Most of this trash (57 percent) gets placed in municipal landfills . About 56 million tons (27 percent) is recovered through either recycling, in the case of glass, paper products, plastic or metals, or through composting, in the case of yard waste. Composting is a method for treating solid waste in which organic material is broken down by microorganisms in the presence of oxygen to a point where it can be safely stored, handled and applied to the environment. Composting is an essential part of reducing household wastes. It can be done inexpensively by every household and produces a product finished compost or humus that can benefit the environment as a natural fertilizer for gardening and farming.
