Selected Historical Computer Designs
Welcome to a gallery of fascinating machine designs! I want to collect here information on historical firsts and on important machines that are relatively unknown and/or are underappreciated. I am indebted to Dr. Fred Brooks, whose love of computer architecture inspired me in class at UNC, Chapel Hill. It was a privilege to also work as a graduate student assistant for him on early drafts of his architecture text, Computer Architecture: Concepts and Evolution . See his text for a complete history of computer designs. Please email me if you have comments, additional references on items in the collection, or suggestions for additional items.

In the context of aggressive modem out of order microprocessors, which exploit instruction level parallelism we assume that L1 cache is accessed in each and every cycle (conservative assumption) The idle time of L2 cache depends on both number of load instruction in a cache and miss rates of both L1 and L2 cache. L2 accesses are generated by L1 misses, so lower the miss rate of L1, higher the idle time ....

This is however an over simpli cation which does not take advantage of developments in memory technology. Main memory is usually composed of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) devices Current DRAMs have an optimized feature called page mode. In page mode, the device has an on chip bu er, that provides access which is a factor of two or more faster than a normal DRAM access[1] However, as we explain later, page mode operation lacks exibility and can result in performance ....
