Education Options, Chapter 8 - BOARDING SCHOOLS: MAKING THE CHOICE
The Boarding School page on the Family Liaison Office Web Site - with links to boarding school web sites and The Boarding School Option , a paper reviewing Department of State resources, making the boarding school decision, factors to consider when choosing a school, the application process, and an explanation (FAQs) of the "away from post" education allowance. Most Foreign Service parents still expect their children to live at home until college. This is not always possible, because a number of posts lack adequate high schools and sometimes even junior high or elementary school facilities. In a typical year, approximately 450 Foreign Service children attend 150 boarding schools in the United States and abroad. Because the boarding school option means early separation from parents, it is very important that the child be actively included in the decision-making process. Parents considering assignment to a post with inadequate schooling should consider the following advantages and disadvantages of a boarding school. ADVANTAGES OF A BOARDING SCHOOL EDUCATION
  • The student's self-reliance and independence are bolstered.

Educational Programs That Work - 1995
Public and Private School Collaboration
Public and Private School Collaboration. A program for students in grades 10 and 11; the Connecticut Scholars Program. A collaboration for the purpose of providing an opportunity for advanced residential study for academically promising urban school students. Description Public Private School Collaboration makes connections and makes connections work. Where public and private schools have not traditionally joined forces, they do so within a collaborative framework. This allows them to apply their finest resources to meet significant needs. It also allows them to gain the support of leading corporations and foundations as well as research institutions and museums as they seek to respond to those needs. Importantly, a collaboration does not have to involve a boarding school, urban schools, or huge foundation grants. It does require the full participation of public and private school partners, definition of genuine need, and the commitment to work together to find and apply resources to meet that need. After three and a half years, adoptions are now under way from Maine to California. They can be found in boarding schools, urban public high schools, day schools, elementary schools, and more. Winston Churchill once said that opportunity seeks not a "seat but a springboard." That is just what this program supplies.

Surely those aforementioned columnists could have offered something more substantive to their readership, perhaps along the lines of discussing the Amicus brief filed on behalf of 30 corporations, including Microsoft, supporting pro-active efforts to admit minorities; or on the system at Michigan, its pros and cons. Granted, a personal attack on George Bush is a good way to stoke emotion, but it is disingenuous and divisive, and takes the discourse away from the real issues at hand.
Hopefully, those who filed the Amicus briefs, those arguing the case, and those ultimately deciding the matter, will base the outcome on something other than the fodder contained in the media drivel.

Canterbury
Windham County, CT Canterbury, population 4,692, is home to one of Connecticut's most scenic roads - Route 169. The north-south state highway exhibits a rural charm that has made Canterbury a popular community. The state’s designated "Official Heroine of Connecticut" is immortalized at the Prudence Crandall House at the intersection of Routes 14 and 169. In 1831, Crandall opened up one of the country's first boarding schools for young black women. After public outcry, Crandall's school was closed, but her effort is memorialized at the museum. Canterbury’s high school students attend Norwich Free Academy in Norwich, while Canterbury Elementary School and the Dr. Helen Baldwin Middle School serve younger students. In May 2001, however, Canterbury will be home to something its residents have not enjoyed since the town's inception in 1703: a town hall. Located off Route 14 near the post office, Canterbury Town Hall also will house a senior/community center and library. Canterbury includes the villages of Westminster and Canterbury. The town has four municipal parks, including River Park near the Quinebaug River at the town's border with Plainfield on Route 14.
