It certainly has come in handy these days teaching English in Connecticut. By now most language arts and English teachers in Connecticut know that grammar will count forty percent of the Connecticut Mastery Test Writing Score. Forty percent! Last summer I dove optimistically into the fray. Surely the Commissioner and the State Board of Education would listen to reason when the three major language arts organizations in the state - the CCTE, Connecticut Reading Association, and the Connecticut Writing Project at Fairfield - united against their proposal. Right? Wrong! The issue wasn't really grammar! That was only for the newspapers and the public. The issue was mostly test reliability. It was certainly convenient for the State Department of Education that the multiple-choice items it needed to stabilize the CMT Writing Sample happened to be grammar questions. Grammar provides a wonderful diversion, with its associations of Mom and apple pie. There is a knee-jerk, rally-round-the-flag emotional reaction one can count on with grammar that one can't with other language arts issues, let's say, reader response or deconstruction. It gives Craig Toensing, the State Board Chairman, the license to play upholder of tradition when interviewed by the Hartford Courant after the vote. He claims it was a spelling error in an e-mail from an English teacher that convinced him to support the 60/40 split. The teacher had been urging him to give less weight to grammar than forty percent.
