National Service in Connecticut
Getting things done in Connecticut . More than people of all ages and backgrounds are helping to solve problems and strengthen communities through national service projects across Connecticut. Serving through local nonprofits, schools, religious organizations and other groups, these citizens tutor and mentor children, coordinate after-school programs, build homes, organize neighborhood watch groups, clean parks, recruit volunteers, and accomplish other things to improve communities. This year, the Corporation for National and Community Service will provide more than to support Connecticut communities through three national service initiatives: AmeriCorps: This year AmeriCorps, the domestic Peace Corps, will provide more than

"The accomplishments of these programs continue to amaze me. AmeriCorps members and Foster Grandparents are making a real difference in the quality of life in our communities and in the lives of our citizens. Congratulations to the Corporation for National Service on a job well done."
Senator Joe Lieberman
"More than 700 volunteers are based at 29 sites in Connecticut...They tutor and mentor children, rehabilitate and build homes, organize safety and clean-up patrols, deliver meals to the elderly and tend to sick patients and the homeless. They do all this through partnerships with local nonprofit organizations. Objections to AmeriCorps are far outweighed by the hundreds of thousands of people it has helped."
The Hartford Courant
"AmeriCorps members serve their communities by improving education, protecting public safety, building and restoring housing, improving health care, safeguarding the environment, providing disaster relief and promoting citizenship."
Governor John G. Rowland
"Unfortunately, there is an incredible demand on Connecticut's limited resources and, as Governor, I am always concerned about preserving educational opportunities and increasing quality and diversity in our educational system. It pleases me to know that organizations such as yours are concerned with improving the quality of education that individual states can offer to their residents."

End Of Life On Our Own Terms ... TV Sponsors
Connecticut Public Radio and the Yale School of Nursing (YSN) are collaborating on a series of news features that explore the quality of life for elderly chronically ill people in Connecticut. These stories will be a monthly feature of "Morning Edition" and "All Things Considered." The series will reveal the stories of real people, whose experiences are not often represented in the media. Hopefully, it will have an effect on our listeners and state policy makers ñ changing attitudes about chronic illness, the elderly, underserved communities and the profession of nursing. "Day In, Day Out: The Struggle to Advance Chronic Care" will explore topics such as health promotion programs for women with chemotherapy-induced menopause, education and diet programs to help African-American women control diabetes, and programs designed to help elderly people quit smoking. In connection with the series, Connecticut Public Radio and the Yale School of Nursing will jointly sponsor various health promotion activities, such as nutritional teach-ins and diabetes screenings. These activities will also take place in the Hill, where YSN is located.

Full-text information and databases in the Connecticut Digital Library ( www.iconn.org ), which officially opened April 9, are available to remote users at home and to on-site users in all state public libraries; libraries in museums, historical societies and hospitals; public and private schools; colleges and universities; and government agencies. "If accessing from home, we have to authenticate that you are actually a Connecticut resident as opposed to anyone else from the world," said Sharon Brettschneider, development division director with the Connecticut State Library, which oversees the digital library along with the state Department of Higher Education. She said anyone with a valid state library card, which has a unique bar code number, can access information and be automatically authenticated from anywhere in the world.

US State Government Aid The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for most state loan, grant and scholarship programs, in addition to the federal loans and grants. When you submit the FAFSA to the US Department of Education, they forward the information on the form to the state student assistance agency. Each state has a different FAFSA submission deadline. If you submit your FAFSA by March 1, you will be in time for all state deadlines, other than Michigan. If you miss the deadline, you will be ineligible to receive state aid for the entire academic year. Procedures for applying for state prepaid tuition programs and the national guard differ from state to state. The amount of information provided on the state web sites varies from state to states. Some states provide comprehensive information about residency requirements, loan, grant, scholarship and prepaid tuition programs and other state aid programs. Others provide minimal information. We recommend visiting the sites for both your state of residence and for the states of the colleges to which you are applying. A B C D ...
