CCSU GEOGRAPHY - GRADUATE PROGRAM
Notice!
Students wanting to become graduate students in geography must contact the Graduate Advisor (Dr. Peter Kyem). This is not an official program description; please consult the most recent edition of the university graduate catalogue. Faculty Dr. Brian Sommers (Chair, DiLoreto 208), Dr. Richard Benfield, Dr. John Harmon, Dr. Peter Kyem, Dr. Timothy Rickard, Dr. Cindy Pope, Dr. Xiaoping Shen, Dr. David Truly, Dr. Philip Van Beynen (Department phone: 860.832.2785) Department Overview Central Connecticut State University has the oldest and largest graduate program in Geography in the state of Connecticut. The graduate program was initiated in 1962 with a Master of Science in Social Science for in-service teachers who desired to complete the requirements for their permanent teaching certificates. However, the program's emphasis has changed since state approval was granted in 1976 to offer a Master of Science in Geography. Since that time, students have used the latter degree in the pursuit of a variety of career goals. Geography is the science of location. The geography faculty teaches students how to use effectively maps and air photos, gather information about places, and make computer analyses. Students use this knowledge to learn about how people use the land in different places, and what impacts humans.

    What is the Geography Club?
The Geography club is a body of faculty and students who came together with a shared interest in the world about them. We come from all different disciplines (geography, history, education, sociology, economics, tourism, buisness, etc.) and believe that by engaging in geographical thought, we gain insight into our chosen disciplines. It's not just about maps!
What kind of things does the Geography Club do?
Our main goal in the geography club is to bring awareness to the importance of Geography as a discipline and to the importance of discovering our world. This is accomplished in a myriad of ways: club meetings, field trips, tutoring programs, local and regional conferences, and encouraging travel as the best way to learn about our world and ourselves, sharing our experiences and inviting speakers to share theirs. In addition, the Club is building an employment opportunity database for our graduates.
Do I have to give timeam I required to "volunteer"?

CT The name "Connecticut" comes from an Algonquin Indian word meaning "on the long tidal river". Connecticut was one of the original 13 states. The Connecticut River cuts through the center of the state, flowing into Long Island Sound, Connecticut's outlet to the Atlantic Ocean. Connecticut's rural areas and small towns contrast sharply with its industrial cities. Many towns center around a small park, known as a "green". Near the green may stand a small white church, a town meeting hall, a tavern and several colonial houses. Forests, rivers, lakes, waterfalls and a sandy shore add to the state's beauty. Connecticut is also an important industrial state. GOVERNMENT:

    Geography
Generally rectangular in shape, Connecticut extends c.90 mi (145 km) from east to west and c.55 mi (90 km) from north to south. The state is divided into two roughly equal sections, usually called the eastern highland and the western highland, which are separated by the Connecticut Valley lowland. The Connecticut River, which flows through only the northern half of this lowland, veers off to the southeast at Middletown in central Connecticut. In the south along Long Island Sound is a low, rolling coastal plain. The western highland, with the Taconic Mts. and the Litchfield Hills, is more rugged than the eastern highland. A few isolated peaks in the west are over 2,000 ft (610 m) high. The Thames and the rivers emptying into it drain the eastern highland, and the Housatonic, with its chief tributary, the Naugatuck, drains the western highland. The Connecticut shore is a popular summer resort area, and the protected waters of Long Island Sound lure boating enthusiasts. Bridgeport is the largest city, with
