2000 Winner: Felix Peng Home state: Connecticut Felix Peng, 13, of Guilford, Connecticut, is this year's National Geographic Bee champion. Second place went to 12-year-old George Thampy, of St. Louis, Missouri, and in third place was Jonathan Janus, of Ravenel, South Carolina. Felix is in the 8th grade at Elisabeth Adams Middle School in Guilford. This was his second trip to the National Geographic Bee finals as he was also the Connecticut state champion in 1999. His interest in geography began when his parents showed him their birthplace, Taiwan, on a globe. He plays the cello and is a member of the Junior National Honor Society. Connecticut is Ready to Succeed in the New Economy The Milken Institute's New Economy Index, which was released October 18, 2000, ranks each state based upon 12 criteria critical to future high-tech growth. The data is then merged to determine where each state places on the Index. The 12 criteria include research and development dollars, the population's percentage of advanced degrees, number of patents issued, venture capital investment, business starts and IPO proceeds - all indicators of future high-tech growth.
