CCR: About
About the Project
This project has been four years in the making and developed directly to fulfill the research needs of the students, faculty, and staff of the University of Connecticut. We would like to acknowledge the staff at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center for their expertise, equipment, and time in helping to formulate the first phase of the project. In addition, we wish to thank the staff at the Connecticut State Library who so generously donated new, high-quality images of the Public Records that are currently being used throughout CCR. These new images were digitized by Northern Micrographics from publications owned by the Connecticut State Library. Currently, it is possible to access scanned images of all fifteen volumes by browsing an A-Z subject index, searching by date, or searching by volume and page number. Although full-text and keyword access to the text is not yet available, future phases of the project will most certainly incorporate this level of advanced access.
About the Original Materials
CCR was created by digitizing microfilm copies of the following printed volumes: The original archival materials that served as the sources for the text of the published Public Records of the Colony are housed in the State Archives at the Connecticut State Library. Because there are some differences between the texts of the documents as found in the original manuscripts and the transcriptions of those documents in the published volumes, researchers interested in using primary sources are advised to consult the originals in the

Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Charlotte Perkins Gilman B orn in Hartford on 3 July 1860, Charlotte Perkins was the daughter of Frederick Beecher (a librarian and magazine editor) and Mary (Fritch) Perkins; she was also the grandniece of Harriet Beecher Stowe. Although she read voraciously, Charlotte Perkins's only formal education consisted of briefly attending the Rhode Island School of Design; she remained interested in art throughout her life, to the point of designing the cover of In This Our World (1893), her book of poetry. She married Charles Walter Stetson in 1884; they had one daughter. Following the birth of her daughter, Gilman was greatly depressed and took a recuperative trip to California. In 1886 Charles Walter Stetson enlisted the aid of noted alienist Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell to treat his wife for what was then called hysteria. The treatment involved complete isolation and the removal of anything that might cause mental stimulation, and Charlotte Perkins Stetson spent the summer isolated in a room in a large country estate. From this experience came her most famous work, The Yellow Wallpaper , first written in 1890 but not separately published until 1899.

http://www.eng.yale.edu/read3ct/FOCL.htm
Dr. Vaisnys, My congratulations to you on your most interesting project as described on website www.eng.yale.edu/read3ct . Most of us who have been associated with libraries and the education of young children have long been acutely aware of how important it is to read to babies and toddlers. My wife has been director of a NAEYC accredited nursery school here in Meriden (she is also on our library board) and for over thirty years she has been urging parents to begin reading to their children as early as possible not only to pave the way for later learning but also to teach them to love words and books in a nurturing environment. It is gratifying to know that the effectiveness of early reading can now be explained by direct evidence of its role in the development of neural networks in the brain and corroborated by studies like the "Bookstart" project mentioned on your website. (Great pictures of the brain in action by the way.) Librarians and friends of libraries are also well aware of this and have sponsored and executed numerous programs over the years directed at getting the message across to new parents and providing them with help, advice and materials. In the years before a child reaches school age the primary resource for parents, nursery schools and daycare centers is the public library. Clearly if one delays until kindergarten it may well be too late. Most local friends groups sponsor story hours and other outreach programs to new parents. Friends of Libraries USA has offered "Books for Babies" packets since 1991. Lillian Levin, who is vice president of our
