Debuts in English
The Handmaid's Tale has catalpulted Poul Ruders into
the top ranks of contemporary composers. P oul Ruders’s highly-acclaimed opera The Handmaid’s Tale will have its English language premiere this week in an ENO production at the London Coliseum. Few debuts could be more timely. Based on Margaret Atwood's chilling novel, The Handmaid's Tale envisions a nightmarish future for the United States that would have been unthinkable say, three years ago, but no longer seems so far-fetched. Following a violent overthrow of the United States government by a religious dictatorship, women are denied the right to read, work, own property or enter into relationships other than first marriages. Those who defy the system are arrested, indoctrinated and assigned to childless families for the sole purpose of procreation. Offred, the title character, attempts to subvert this regime with disturbing and fateful results. Premiered in Copenhagen to sold out houses in 2000, Ruders’s opera is described as ‘fabulously inventive’, incorporating elements of a Bach chorale, medieval chanting and gospel music. The effect is both memorable and disturbing.

16. AOR - Adult Contemporary Music In Japan
Full of AOR, Westcoast, Smooth Jazz, Fusion, Adult contemporary musicrelated informative website from Japan. WELCOME. I started this
WELCOME I started this website in November 1995 because I could find out very few Music Site mainly dedicated to "A.O.R. (Adult Oriented Rock)", for which European Music Lovers called as "Westcoast Music" in those days. And at that time, I had been aware that the music category called as "A.O.R." in Europe was a little different from so-called one here in Japan. In Europe, when people use this word "A.O.R.", it means that more hard-rock / melodic rock oriented music category, and on the other hand, the music so-called "Westcoast Music" in Europe is also a little different from our "A.O.R.". Due to preventing the confusion between the difference of definition of "A.O.R.", I decided to name my website as "Adult Contemporary Music In Japan". The word "Adult Contemporary Music" is generally understood that it includes not only "West Coast Pop Music" but also a part of "Black Contemporary" plus "Smooth Jazz/Fusion". It did not take a long time to receive attention of music-lovers in the world. And at the same time, some talented musicians in Adult Contemporary Music scene and some record companies have offered me their supports for updating my pages. (Special thanks to Sherwood Ball for giving me a chance to meet you and introducing me to many talented musicians. Without your assistance, I could not build up this website.)

The Contemporary Music Forum, Washington D.C.'s oldest new music ensemble, concludes its 29th season of concerts of new works of chamber music on Monday, April 28, 2003, at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, New York Avenue, with SPRING FORUM . The concert includes works by composers John Ross, Anthony Villa, Bruce Mahin, and Libby Larsen. Including a World Premiere by Anthony Villa. As the eminent music critic for the Washington Post, Joseph McLellan, just wrote of our concert on February 28, 2001: "The richness of imagination and variety of styles in this music tonal and atonal, improvisational and heavily structured, occasionally reminiscent of jazz and deeply rooted in the classical tradition made for an evening of happy revelations. I could not help recalling the first concerts of the Contemporary Music Forum, 28 years ago, and reflecting on how the new music scene in Washington has grown and improved, in part because of the encouragement and exposure this organization has given to composers." Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to the Contemporary Music Forum. The cost of producing a concert is many times the ticket revenues received. We depend upon the generosity of our audience and other supporters to continue to bring you the best of the music of our time. Click on Membership (above) for more details.
