Kiri-uu (Finno-Celtic song) The Department of Contemporary Music Studies (DCMS) is a teaching and research department at Macquarie University (Sydney, Australia) dedicated to the study of various 20th Century musics (popular, folk/indigenous, avant garde etc.) It offers a major in Music Studies within the university's BA degree program; a BA Honours year; and a postgraduate research program leading to Masters and PhD degrees. The DCMS is also actively engaged in research, publication and recording projects. It publishes Perfect Beat - the biannual Pacific journal of research into contemporary music and popular culture and runs Coral Music, a music label that records and releases material by artists and communities from the Western Pacific region. The DCMS has established a number of ongoing collaborations with musicians, cultural organisers and activists from the Western Pacific. The Worcester Phoenix December 19 - 26, 1997 clubs by night bands in town club directory rock/pop ... hot links *** Burkhard Glaetzner CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FOR OBOE (Berlin Classics) In the context of late-20th-century music, the oboe can't help recalling the sound of electronic music its strange insistent tone has a similar unearthly quality as well as the almost human sound it shares with its reedy ancestors and cousins around the globe. The pieces gathered on this disc make full use of this weirdly postmodern combination. Burkhard Glaetzner can play his oboe both as a freewheeling, honking reed leaping extraordinary intervals and as a breathy, meditative woodwind capable of strange overtones and divided sounds. Isang Yun's piece gives him the most range to work with the beautiful solo work Piri makes use of an encyclopedic range of tones for the instrument. Other highlights are Xenakis's characteristically histrionic piece for oboe and percussion, Dmaathen , and a hyperkinetic performance of Sequenza , the piece Berio has written for a variety of solo instruments.
