New Zealand is 1930km (1200 miles) southeast of Australia and consists of two major islands, the North Island (114,470 sq km/44,197 sq miles) and the South Island (150,660 sq km/58,170 sq miles), which are separated by Cook Strait. Stewart Island (1750 sq km/676 sq miles) is located immediately south of the South Island, and the Chatham Islands lie 800km (500 miles) to the east of Christchurch. To view a map of New Zealand The country's largest city, Auckland, is situated on the peninsula that forms the northern part of North Island. The southern part of North Island is characterised by fertile coastal plains rising up to volcanic peaks. Going from north to south temperatures decrease. Two-thirds of the country is mountainous, a region of swift-flowing rivers, deep alpine lakes and dense subtropical forest.

BASIC INFORMATION ON THE MARINE RESOURCES OF THE COOK ISLANDS
    Introduction
    Geography
The Cook Islands The 15 islands have a total land area of 237 square kilometres. The largest island is Rarotonga (67 square kilometres). The islands of the northern group are coral atolls as is Manuae in the southern group. The rest of the southern group islands, Mauke, Mitiaro, Mangaia, and Atiu are raised islands with encircling reef platforms adjacent to the coast. Aitutaki is part volcanic island and part atoll, with an enclosed lagoon. Rarotonga is a volcanic island with a narrow fringing reef. Rainfall can vary considerably from year to year, but 200 centimetres per year is considered normal. Winds are predominantly from the southeast, with average speeds of about 15 km/hr. Cyclone season in the Cook Islands is from November to April. It is thought that the Cook Islands have been populated for approximately 2000 years, a relatively short period of time compared with many other Pacific islands. In 1996, the population was 17,726. Of this, 9,930 (or 56%) live in Rarotonga.
    Economy
The economy is mostly based on tourism, offshore banking, and the black pearl industry. Some 50,000 tourists visit the Cook Islands annually. In the last few years, tourism has brought revenues of over 33.5 million New Zealand dollars (NZD). Seventy per cent of all exports from the Cook Islands come from the sea; pearl exports alone make up 60% of all exports. In 1998, pearl exports were valued at 5.2 million NZD; however, the Ministry of Marine Resources estimates that pearl exports were worth over 10 million NZD. Trochus and aquarium fish also bring in income. In addition, the government collects money from licensing foreign-owned, longline tuna boats that fish within the Cook Islands EEZ.

Geography The Cook Islands are a widely scattered group of islands located in the south-east Pacific Ocean approximately half way between New Zealand and Hawaii with a total land area of 241 sq km. Geologically they can be subdivided into 2 distinct groups. The southern Cook Islands compromise Raratonga which is volcanic in origin, Aitutaki which is volcanic coral and Atiu, Takutea, Mauke, Mitiaro and Manuae which are all raised coral atolls. The northern Cook Islands which comprise Penrhyn, Manihiki, Pukapuka, Palmerston, Rakahanga, Suvorov and Nassau are all low coral atolls. The main administrative and commercial center is the capital city Avarua on the island of Raratonga. The climate is tropical, moderated by trade winds. Whilst rainfall averages 2000mm per annum on the mountain slopes of Rarotonga much drier conditions prevail further north. The Islands are lashed by typhoons from November to March. The Islands are 10 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time. Direct daily flights are offered by Air New Zealand from Rarotonga to Los Angeles, Auckland, Fiji, Tahiti and Honolulu. Telecommunications are excellent.
