Captain Cook: Explorer, Navigator and Maritime Pioneer
By Professor Glyn Williams Captain James Cook is widely renowned as an explorer, pioneering navigator and preventer of scurvy. Glyn Williams investigates the standards he set in maritime exploration. Page 1 of 6 The early years The first Pacific voyage The second Pacific voyage The third Pacific voyage ... Print this article The early years The three major voyages of discovery of Captain James Cook provided his European masters with unprecedented information about the Pacific Ocean, and about those who lived on its islands and shores. His achievements were the more remarkable because of his humble origins in an agricultural labouring family, from Marton, North Yorkshire. '... he intended to go not only 'farther than any man has been before me, but as far as I think it possible for man to go'.' Cook first went to sea at the age of 18. He spent ten years working in the coal trade of the east coast of England - with its shoreline of treacherous, shifting shoals, uncharted shallows, and difficult harbours. In 1755 he joined the Royal Navy, and within two years passed his master's examination to qualify for the navigation and handling of a royal ship. He gained surveying experience in North American waters during the Seven Years War - as Britain and France fought for supremacy in North America - and spent the first years of peace between 1763 and 1767 charting the fog-shrouded coastline of Newfoundland.

Introduction
Captain James Cook was the most prominent of the explorers of the Pacific. He discovered many Pacific Islands and was the first European to explore Australia's east coast. In one of his journals, Captain Cook wrote that his goal was to go 'farther than any other man has been before me and as far as I think it possible for a man to go.' (Doesn't this sound like Star Trek?!) Come join our treasure hunt and find out more about this interesting explorer.

    Captain Cook (1728-79)
Captain Cook is arguably the most famous explorer of Australia. He was born in Marton, England and spent several years working for a shipbuilding firm before enlisting in the navy in 1755. Between 1756 and 1767 Cook set about charting the North Atlantic coastal waters off Newfoundland and Nova Scotia and the Saint Lawrence River. His first great voyage, to the South Pacific, began in 1768 whilst in command of the Endeavour. Tahiti was his destination and the purpose, to transport British astronomers to the island in order to observe the movement of the planet Venus across the sun in June 1769. Next he proceeded to New Zealand, where he took formal possession of areas from both the main islands and accurately charted 3860 km of coastline for the first time. During 1770 he discovered the east coast of Australia, which he charted and claimed for Great Britain under the name of New South Wales.

lifelines : James Cook: A man for the millennium PAUL COOPER
James Cook; explorer and scientist. Extract from 1775 portrait by Nathaniel Dance These stunning geographic achievements would alone be sufficient to give Cook a high place in any millennial hall of fame. But Cook was far more than an explorer. He was a scientist, an observer, and a man of great humanity and compassion. Bounty . He epitomised the philosophy of leadership implicit in Francis Drake’s dictum "have the gentleman to haul and draw with the mariner". Cook asked nothing of his men that he was unwilling or unable to do himself. He led from the front, and insisted that his officers did so too. Over matters to do with health and hygiene he was uncompromising. Perhaps the best illustration of this is in his insistence that the seamen should eat sauerkraut as part of a varied diet to ward off scurvy. Because of its unpleasant odour, the men were unwilling to eat sauerkraut. Rather than punishing those who would not accept the sauerkraut, Cook insisted on the officers eating it, and treating it as a great delicacy. The men were persuaded by their officers’ example, and sauerkraut became a part of their regular diet.

Captain James Cook by Michele K. My report is on Captain James Cook. First, I will tell you facts about his life. Then I will tell you about his explorations. After that, I will tell you of the dangers he faced. Next, I will tell you why Captain James Cook should win the "Explorer of the Century" award. Finally, I will discuss me as an explorer. Captain Cook had an exciting life! Captain Cook was born on October 27, 1728, in Yorkshire, England. He was the son of a farm worker. In 1775, he joined the British Royal Navy. He was an expert navigator! After only two years in the navy, the British government chose him to be a captain for an expedition. He also helped map Quebec. Captain Cook made three voyages. The purpose of the first voyage was to observe the transit of Venus and to discover "Australia". The transit of Venus is when the Earth and Venus are exactly lined up, like an eclipse. During the second part of this voyage, Captain Cook became the first European to see Australia. He named the east coast of Australia "New South Wales" and claimed it for Britain. The aim of the second voyage was to determine whether there was a south continent (Antarctica). He did his by sailing as far south as possible. He made the first recorded crossing of the Antarctic Circle in January, 1773. On his third voyage, Cook and his crew were the first Europeans to sight the Hawaiian Islands. Even though Cook was protective of his crew, they still faced many dangers, At that time, there was no communication between ships and land. Once a person was at sea, that person had great risk of getting lost. A second danger Cook faced was when he was at the Hawaiian islands. Some of Cook's crew were killed and used for food by islanders, and Cook was killed by an islander. Also, Cook was exploring unknown territory and did not know what to expect. Those were some of the dangers Captain Cook faced.

On this voyage he disproved the rumor of a great southern continent, explored the Antarctic Ocean and the New Hebrides, visited New Caledonia, and by the observance of strict diet and hygiene prevented scurvy , heretofore the scourge of long voyages. Cook sailed again in 1776; in 1778 he visited and named the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) and unsuccessfully searched the northwest coast of North America for a Northwest Passage . On the return voyage he was killed by natives on the island of Hawaii. See the definitive edition of his journals, ed. by J. C. Captain James Cook
The man who mapped the Pacific
British explorer and navigator, famous for his three voyages of exploration in the South Pacific Ocean and the coastal waters of North America. Although Cook is best known as the discoverer of the Hawaiian Islands (see Hawaii), his greatest achievements were the broad scope of his exploration and his detailed, careful documentation of his discoveries. Early Life and Seafaring Experience First Pacific Voyage Cook's talent for mapmaking made him a logical choice when the British government decided to launch a voyage to the Pacific. Officially, the expedition was designed to observe the transit of Venus, a rare astronomical phenomenon that would be visible only in the southern hemisphere. A second motive, however, was to search for Terra Australis, a large continent widely believed to exist in the far southern latitudes. The scientific importance attached to the voyage was evident in its crew, which included an astronomer, two artists, and three naturalists (among them Joseph Banks, later president of the Royal Society).
The expedition set sail from Plymouth, England, in 1768 aboard a single ship, the Endeavour. After crossing the Atlantic Ocean and rounding Cape Horn at the tip of South America, the crew headed for Tahiti, which British explorer Samuel Wallis had encountered in 1767. Tahiti was ideally situated for observing the transit of Venus. Centrally located in the South Pacific, with good harbors, friendly inhabitants, a balmy climate, and abundant food and water, Tahiti would prove an important site for rest and reprovisioning on Cook's voyages.
