Proper Regulation of Unapproved GMO Crops a Must for U.S. Food Security Story Filed: Thursday, April 18, 2002 10:52 AM EST WASHINGTON, Apr 18, 2002 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ The American Corn Growers Association (ACGA) is concerned that federal agencies responsible for guaranteeing the security of the U.S. food supply are not taking their role seriously enough when it comes to preventing the release of genetically modified (GMO) commodity varieties that are not approved for human consumption into the marketing system. "Given the fact that the U.S. government is spending many millions of dollars to protect the American food supply, there is no excuse for allowing unapproved GMO varieties on the market and the biotech companies responsible for such contamination of the food supply should be held liable," says Dan McGuire, program director of the ACGA Farmer Choice-Customer First program. ACGA's Farmer Choice-Customer First provides unbiased, honest, and objective information to the nation's corn producers. By having access to this information, farmers can make educated decisions about what varieties of seed to plant and how best to market them. From Fertilizer Recommendations for Agronomic Crops in Minnesota by George Rehm, Michael Schmitt, John Lamb and Roger Eliason
CORN
In Minnesota, corn is grown on more acres than any other crop. Nationally, Minnesota ranks among the top five in production. Average corn yields have improved steadily over the past several decades. While general fertilizer use contributed substantially to yield increases in the past, total fertilizer management which optimizes nutrient efficiency will be needed to increase future production and profitability.
Nitrogen Suggestions
In Minnesota, there are two suggested methods for selecting a rate of fertilizer N. In the western portion of the state, the soil nitrate test is highly recommended as a management tool for determining the rate of fertilizer N needed. The results of a spring nitrate test can be used when corn is grown in the eastern part of the state. Suggested rates of fertilizer N are based on either a combination of a realistic yield goal, soil organic matter content, and previous crop, when there is no measure of residual nitrate-nitrogen.
Standard N Recommendations
The consideration of a realistic expected yield, previous crop, and soil organic matter content is the basis for fertilizer N recommendations when a soil nitrate test is not used. These recommendations are summarized in

    We will be adding more later. For now you can see one of our corn fields in the background of the picture below. This was a pen of steers we were feeding out on our home grown feed. Click on the picture to see a larger version.
    The performance on this pen of cattle was way above average. The picture was taken in August 1995. Follow a pictorial tour of part of our Farming experiences in 1999. (2001 pictures, Click Here ) We are considered a small family farm as opposed to a larger Corporate Farm. Click on the thumbnails below to see a larger picture.
    First picture on left shows a good crop of Alfalfa Hay about ready to cut. Second and third pictures are after it was cut and the floods came. Fourth and fifth pictures are baling hay in large round bales. This is a typical "Farmer Opportunity" but not the preferred way to put up hay. It appears that we grew the Alfalfa, we mowed it, we washed it and then baled it. Hard to believe but we usually irrigate our crops.

    How are Small Grain Cover Crops Established?
    A second method of establishing small grain cover crops is to wait until the soybean or corn crop has been harvested and use a no-till grain drill or shallow tillage to incorporate the seed. Seeding cover crops into fields planted to seed corn or silage corn, which is harvested earlier than grain corn, can be done after harvest with a grain drill or with a spreader and shallow tillage. Additionally, cover crops can be planted with drills or shallow tillage following harvest of early maturing soybean. Generally, only small grains that overwinter should be planted after the middle of September in north of I-80 and no later than mid-October.Small grains that don't overwinter, like oat and barley, normally need to be drilled or incorporated before mid-September for them to grow enough to provide any benefits.     By Ina, Golden Waves WIFE A combine is a machine that cuts and thrashes grain. (Thrash and thresh are words that mean the same thing.) Combines are very expensive machines. Most farmers who plant very many acres of grain crops have their own combine but custom harvesters can also be hired to cut the crops. Each combine has a "header" that can be removed when the combine is being moved. Different headers are used for different crops. This combine has a "corn-head" attached to the front. With each trip through the field, this combine will pick and thrash eight rows of corn, planted in rows 30 inches apart. The combine has a grain tank for holding the thrashed grain. When that tank is full, it must be dumped (unloaded) before the combine can go back to thrashing. The combine operator is unloading the grain tank into a waiting truck, which will carry the corn to a storage facility. To thrash is to separate the corn kernels from the cob. These ears of corn were gathered for a field test to examine the quality of the corn. When the corn is ready to be harvested, the green leaves covering the corn cob become very dry, whitish in color, and almost paper-like. These cornhusks are stripped from the corncobs by the combine.
