The strength of the collection is records relating to each of the Australian states, New Zealand and Britain. For countries and regions for which the collection is not strong, up-to-date addresses are provided to assist genealogists.

The Hon. Peter Foss, Minister for the Arts, will launch LISWA's new Genealogy Centre on Tuesday 7 December, 1999 at the Alexander Library Building. The Genealogy Centre is designed as a focus point or 'first port of call', and will attract anyone with an interest in genealogy and family history, including both beginners and professional researchers. It will operate as a partnership between the Library and Information Service of Western Australia (LISWA) and the Western Australian Genealogical Society Inc. (WAGS) to enable clients to access the extensive collections held in the Alexander Library Building, and to provide links to related external collections and services. The Genealogy Centre is accessible during LISWA's extensive opening hours, with additional assistance provided by volunteers from the Western Australian Genealogical Society Inc. (WAGS) each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9.30am - 1.00pm.
