DANCES, Teachers' Association of Canada, 1995) DEFINITIONS As written in a form not likely to change, for example the instructions for a published dance. Rumors and hearsay are sometimes mistaken for facts. Dogma: Considered rules from high authority, e.g. RSCDS Headquarters. May vary in time and interpretation. Sometimes written in The Manual of Scottish Country Dancing or in TACNOTES ON R.S.C.D.S. DANCES , sometimes promulgated verbally, with varying success. Common Practice: Although not dogma, the way things are usually done. Local variations may exist, giving rise to arguments about what is "right." These are the " Unwritten Rules Opinions: Sometimes in agreement with Common Practice or Facts or Dogma, but not necessarily. When Opinions are delivered by someone with "positional authority," they may even be mistaken for dogma. The line between Opinion and Common Practice is grey and demonstrably arguable. 52. ..it's TRADITIONAL - Country Dancing -
ENGLISH country dancing used to be taught in all schools and is stillon the curriculum of many. Unlike all the different forms
http://www.geocities.com/traditions_uk/dancing.html
The British Isles have many regional country dances : in England perhaps the most famous is Morris dancing , which takes place everywhere, although different regions have their own particular traditions; Garland dancing is mainly a ladies' and children's dance, also a northern tradition, and is closely related to Morris; Clog dancing is yet another a north of England custom, clogs being the footwear of the mill and factory workers in the past; Stick dancing is another variant of Clog Morris and tends to be very localised. These types of dance are perfomed by teams of dancers who practice rigorously and regularly; the other end of the spectrum is English Country Dance - once the popular dancing of all classes of society - which is danced with gusto by complete amateurs at many social occasions.
Scotland has its own dancing traditions: reels, flings (as in "Highland Fling") and sword dances; Irish dancing is very distinctive and although it has always been danced in Ireland and Irish clubs and societies on the mainland, it has enjoyed a recent resurgence after the Riverdance company was chosen as the "fill-in" for the Eurovision Song Contest and went on to achieve world-wide fame.
MORRIS DANCING is English in origin : there is a common belief that the name is a corruption of "Moorish" but one wonders how north African dances got to England and why Morris dancing bears no resemblance to the dances of north Africa and Spain, which were definitely influenced by the Moors. A more likely derivation is from the Latin

    What is Scottish Country Dancing?
Danced in the barns and croft houses, the ballrooms and the castles of Scotland for centuries, Scottish Country Dancing captures the spirit, the wonder, and the music of Scotland. Learn Scottish Jigs and Reels, Hornpipes and Rants, and the elegant Strathspey. The form of dancing is sets of couples, but you don't need a partner to join the fun. And the music will tell what to do!

    58. Twin Cities Branch What Is Scottish Country Dancing
What is Scottish country dancing? Scottish country dancing is a modern form ofthe country dancing popular in England and Scotland in the 18th century.
    http://www.rscds-twincities.org/whatis.html
What is Scottish Country Dancing? What is Scottish Country Dancing? Classes Events Membership ... Home Page Think of SCD as a cross between square or contra dance (although there is no caller) and ballet; there are about a dozen basic figures which will get you through quite a number of dances, although many dances have their own quirks and specialities which make them unique and fun to dance. There is also more emphasis on "steps" than in, say, ceilidh dancing, but the basic technique can be learned at a week-end workshop or through a couple of months' worth of practice evenings once a week. Even though there are so many dances, you don't have to learn any of them by heart if you don't want to the programmes for balls and social evenings are usually published well before the event, so everybody can check their crib sheets. Also, at the event itself dances are often recapitulated or even sometimes walked through slowly before the music starts (although local custom may vary). SCD is a very social form of dancing, not only because you get to dance with seven or so people at once instead of just with one partner (smiles and eye contact are almost mandatory, and if you want there is a lot of opportunity for relaxed "flirting") but also because there are workshops, balls and social dances being held in places all over the world. It is nice to be able to travel and join a SCD group for a night nearly everywhere you go.
