Where can I find Scottish Country Dancing
An obvious starting point is the the RSCDS , the umbrella society for Scottish Country Dancing (they also have pages for members ). It's also a start, and they have comprehensive contacts for all branches in the world, including web sites for those branches which have them. But addresses are very dry, so we keep looking. We reach Anselm Lingnau's Strathspey web site ,. This site was probably the first major web site for SCD, and is the home page of the Strathspey mailing list, including a comprehensive archive of postings to that list. More on this later. Anselm also has links to other interesting pages. Among these is Alan Paterson's DanceData database . He has combined various dance indexes and produced a database program which allows you to find all the details on each dance, find all the dances devised by a certain person/in a certain book/with a given tune/containing certain formations/... So you could do a search for all 3-couple jigs devised by Roy Goldring which contain reels of four (there are three). Or you could ask who devised The Mercat Cross ... and find there are four dances by that name. Or... You can either download the program from Alan's web site or go to the Strathspey web site and use Anselm's web front-end. If you want to know which tune goes to a dance (or vice versa), you can also ask Peter Hastings' index, hosted on Strathspey Now we're talking. And there's plenty more. Say you're going travelling and you want to know if you can get your fix of dancing while your there: try the

Rensselaer English Country Dances What is English Country Dancing? Home See also 'What Is English Country Dancing?' by Alan Winston "It may be possible to do without dancing entirely... but when a beginning is made - when the felicities of rapid motion have once been though slightly, felt - it is impossible not to ask for more" - Jane Austen If the frenetic pace of life in the 21st century is starting to get to you, take time out to return to the more civilized pace of life in the sixteenth century through the medium of English Country Dance. The stately dancing dramatized in recent films ('Elizabeth' and Jane Austen films) stirred a touch of culture envy; a longing for more elegant forms of social intercourse, less brash and brazen than our own. In no time at all, you can be gliding along to the simple, smooth flowing movements of English dance set to beautiful early classical music. As one dance title suggests ("Quite Carried Away"), you will be transported back in time to a more relaxed, elegant era. The origins of English Country dance trace back to the court and country dances of sixteenth century France and England. Queen Elizabeth I was reported to have enjoyed watching the ladies of the court perform "country dances", which were simpler dances than the formal ones she herself was expected to dance.

What is Scottish Country Dancing?

Contributed by Anselm Lingnau
Scottish Country Dancing is a modern form of the 'country dancing' popular in England and Scotland in the 18th century. It involves groups of six to ten people (most of the time) of mixed sex (most of the time) a 'set' dancing to the driving strains of reels, jigs and strathspeys played on the fiddle, accordion, flute, piano, drums, etc. (no bagpipes, mostly!). The dance often combines solo figures for the 'first couple' in the set with movements for all the dancers, although there is considerable variation there are over 7000 different dances catalogued, of which maybe 1000 or so are of lasting and non-local importance. Many of these dances derive from traditional sources such as old manuscripts and printed dance collections, but a lot have been devised in the fairly recent past, say the last fifty years or so. This fusion of the traditional and the modern as well as its ongoing evolution are part of the attraction of Scottish Country Dancing.
Think of SCD as a cross between square or contra dance (although there is no caller) and ballet; there are about a dozen basic figures which will get you through quite a number of dances, although many dances have their own quirks and specialities which make them unique and fun to dance. There is also more emphasis on 'steps' than in, say, Ceilidh dancing, but the basic technique can be learned at a week-end workshop or through a couple of months' worth of practice evenings once a week. Even though there are so many dances, you don't have to learn any of them by heart if you don't want to the programmes for balls and social evenings are usually published well before the event, so everybody can check their crib sheets. Also, at the event itself dances are often recapitulated or even sometimes walked through slowly before the music starts (although local custom may vary).
