http://www.kporterfield.com/writes/Creative_Writes_21.html
Why We Write:
My own reasons for writing vary, depending on my mood and what it is I’m writing at the moment. Since reading Terry Tempest Williams’ list, I’ve made it a practice to check in with myself every few weeks and jot down a quick list of my personal reasons for putting words on paper. As a practical matter, having a written record of why I do what I do serves as a reminder of my intent when I’m mired in the middle of a project with no end in site. I can’t count the times my co-author, Emory, and I told ourselves that we were writing American Indian Contributions to the World because we wanted to change the way history is taught. We spoke those words so often they became our litany. The power in that incantation got us through the cold Dakota winters and what seemed like an endless stretch of peanut butter on day old bread because our advance was a small one. They gave us strength when we had spats with our editor and with each other. They sustained us when we suspected that the project was far too ambitious for us to finish. Beyond moving me forward, allowing myself to know why I write inspires me to the courage necessary to take risks I wouldn’t take if my reasons for writing remained unspoken. Knowing I have good reasons for writing provides me with a solid base from which to plunge forward into new territory. I’m able to begin a messy, juicy piece of writing that is rich with promise, putting words on paper even when I don’t know where they’re leading me.

Here's some links we found about calls for submission and contests for youth poetry. Some poetry contests from impressive-sounding organizations (The Library of Whatever Poetry) actually accept nearly all poems submitted, tell you your poem is outstanding and wonderful, and then pester you to buy expensive anthologies, plaques, etc. See the article vanity contests at the League of Canadian Poets webstore site for further information on the many kinds of poetry contests. There's a big collection of links about all kinds of online contests (some for youth) at onlinecontests The Sheree Fitch Prize for Youth (alternates between prose and poetry each year) The Claremont Literary Review features the work of young adults and holds an annual poetry contest. Following on from a very successful Creative Writing class run at Gairloch High School in 1996/97, we started a writers' circle. We meet once a month to read our work, exchange ideas, discuss things literary (and non-literary) and drink coffee. The following pieces by local writers are the latest batch to be aired on the web site. Previous contributions including poetry and stories are still available online and these can be read on the archive page This page features Pam Shinkins' pilgrimage into the past, Mike Powley's summery summary, plus insights into local life by Derek Taylor and Anne Solamito, and another short story by Nicola Taylor. A Peace of History
By Pam Shinkins I have always been sensitive to portents and the gusty Wester Ross wind seemed to be urging me to reconsider the route I had planned to walk with my dogs that day… So, leaving Loch Gairloch behind me, I turned south on the B8056 towards Red Point. Dogs on leads, I walked briskly for half an hour or so until I came within sight of Shieldaig Lodge. Now I would have to say that it is exceedingly unlike me to ignore a hostelry while out walking - but inexplicably, ignore it I did as I crossed the road, heading up a rough track pausing only to check my compass for confirmation of who-knows-what. I slipped the dogs' leashes and together we began a gentle climb towards what I judged would be the general area of Loch Horrisdale.

This site is closing in June due to lack of financial support, but you are very welcome to look around in the meantime or to send in your work for us to publish.
Our aim is to provide a place where eligible people can show examples of their own creative work while also being INSPIREd by other's efforts. Contributors don't have to be professional artists, and contributions don't have to fit an established arts categories. Creativity encompasses any field where your imagination and the choices you make along the way result in the final product - this includes almost everything, like writing down your reviews of the things you use, see or participate in, taking a photo of your dog, writing an email expressing your opinions about something, and so on....... The variations are endless and we're trying to ensure that they all get the attention they deserve. So if you feel like voluntarily contributing in any way or just having a good read, we urge you to take a closer look.

Author: Joan Franklin Smutny
June 2001 Teaching strategies that stimulate higher level and imaginative thinking are important curriculum extensions for gifted students who have already mastered much of the written and oral language skills required at their grade level. This digest presents strategies and activities that, while appropriate for all students, encourage gifted students especially to work at their own pace and level of complexity and extend their talents in a variety of ways. Exploring Poetic Language: Free Verse Poetry presents an opportunity for gifted students to explore (1) the quality of words, (2) the power of metaphoric language, and (3) the complexity and subtlety of meaning. When writing free verse without the constrictions of a rhyme scheme, students can focus on imagery and point of view, and experiment with different writing styles. Creating a group poem.

About Cowell Welcome from the Provost History Facts and Figures What Makes Cowell Distinctive WELCOME FROM THE PROVOST April 2003
Dear Cowell Alumni and Friends: I am writing to thank you on behalf of the faculty, staff, and students of Cowell College for the on-going support that the college receives from its alumni and friends. Your gifts are the principal means by which the college mounts the special programs which make Cowell a special place. The colleges provide a special dimension to UCSC's uncommon commitment to undergraduate education. As the campus grows to accommodate the "echo of the baby boom generation," the importance of the mission of the colleges, to connect students to the academic resources of the larger university through smaller scale learning communities, is increasingly clear. Visits from alumni and friends are always welcome. If you are visiting Santa Cruz, please stop by and tour the college and consider joining the students and faculty for lunch in the dining hall. And if it's Thursday evening, join us for college night. The provost's office number is 831-459-2251; my electronic mail address is ladusaw@ucsc.edu

The Thomas Jefferson Award
FOR EMBODIMENT OF THE IDEALS OF THOMAS JEFFERSON
Purpose
The Thomas Jefferson Award, funded through a grant from the Robert Earll McConnell Foundation, honors a member of the University of Missouri community who “through personal influence and performance of duty in teaching, writing and scholarship, character and influence, devotion and loyalty to the University best exemplifies the principles and ideals of Thomas Jefferson”. For example, Jefferson encouraged competition among ideas, rejected superstition in favor of a scientific and rational world view, believed that society and government should be tolerant of differences, supported free public education and the application of knowledge to the solution of public problems, and was devoted to free expression. In light of its stated purpose, the Thomas Jefferson Award recognizes individuals who rise above excellence and demonstrate clear distinction in teaching, research, writing, creative activities, and service to the University of Missouri and humankind.
