There is the continued trend of UK victims being encouraged to travel overseas to meet West Africans operating 419 Fraud.. Amsterdam has always been a favoured meeting point, though there does seem appear to be an increase in this city being used of late. Another theme running through West African Fraud is the use of Western Union. US nationals especially are sending large sums of money to the UK via this method, before being invited overseas to meet the fraudsters. Again there is a link with Holland, where money is sent to the UK, but the invitation to meetings is in Amsterdam.

Beat Auto Theft Through Law Enforcement Auto Theft Prevention Tips Identity Theft Prevention Auto Theft Summary The unit was formed in 1992 as a result of the Illinois Motor Theft Prevention Act. The task force's primary mission is to investigate organized theft rings, insurance fraud, re-tagging operations, and career auto thieves. The task force addresses vehicle theft and fraud by utilizing a variety of resources, such as Crime Stoppers programs, insurance companies, NICB, as well as local, county and federal police agencies. Each of these resources assist BATTLE in identifying and arresting offenders. In addition, BATTLE interviews and recruits confidential sources of information for tactical cases. Officers provide manpower, intelligence data and material support to local police departments and surrounding auto theft task forces in a coordinated effort to reduce vehicle theft in Illinois. In 2002, DuPage County received 757 reports of motor vehicle thefts, a 14% decrease since 2001. Of the 757 vehicles stolen 72 percent were recovered. 79 percent of the vehicles, which were recovered, had no damage. Forty-four percent of the recoveries were made within DuPage County, 52% in other Illinois counties and the remainder were found out of state.

Cracking Down On The Growing Crime Of ID Theft By Larry Gilbert
September 3, 2002
For the second time in four years, the U.S. General Accounting Office reported identity theft as the fastest growing crime in America, with businesses and consumers losing billions of dollars to identity thieves. Stolen personal and financial information is often used to make unauthorized purchases, open fraudulent credit and checking accounts, and access government services in the names of unsuspecting consumers. In addition to the staggering financial costs, ID crime contributes to passport fraud, counterfeiting and forgery, money laundering, mugging and burglaries and terrorism. Consumers, businesses, and government agencies can no longer afford the financial and security risks associated with identity theft and fraud. They need ways to efficiently verify the identities of individuals during face-to-face transactions. An independent study completed by Opinion Dynamics Corporation a few years ago identified that one out of every five Americans, or a member of their families, has been a victim of identity theft. Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the potentially devastating consequences of being a victim of identity fraud. Sophisticated fraud rings not only run up credit card bills and wipe out checking accounts, but have even been known to sell victims’ houses without their knowledge, and commit crimes using their names.

Identity Theft
by Chris E. McGoey, CPP, CSP, CAM the Crime Doctor Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes Identity theft can take many forms. An illegal immigrant may use you social security number and date of birth for employment purposes or to obtain a birth certificate. Imagine the confusion that can be created when the IRS wants to know why you didn't declare the extra income reported to them from someone using your name and social security number. Sometimes personal identification numbers are sold over and over to hundreds of individuals who in turn attempt to obtain bogus credit in your name or establish utility services and run up the bills. Sometimes arrested criminals will gave assumed names, DOB's, and SSN's. Innocent persons can have criminal records reported in the databases because of these situations. See how easy it is to explain when you are mistakenly arrested for an outstanding warrant. Identity theft can take months and sometimes even years to detect and can take about the same time to correct the damage. According to the California Public Interest Research Group (CALPIRG) and the Privacy Rights Clearing House, victims of identity theft spend an average of 175 hours and $808 in out-of-pocket costs (not including attorney fees) to fix their wrecked credit problem. Identity theft can significantly traumatize anyone because it is unnerving to know (or not know) the extent of the

How to Tell if Your Child is Involved in a Gang
How would react if you received a phone call from the police saying your child had been shot or was in custody for shooting someone? It's a parent's worst nightmare. The increase in gang related violence reinforces the need for parents to know where their children are, who they are with, and what they are doing. How can you tell if your child is involved in a gang? There are some early warning signs parents can look for:
  • Your children become difficult to communicate with. They become argumentative when you talk about their activities and friends.
  • You notice a change in dress and appearance. They want to wear only specific colors, oversized clothing, bandanas, baseball caps, etc. Look for gang logos on the inside of coats and hats. They may also use tattoos to identify themselves.

Identity Theft: Authentication As A Solution Prepared by National Fraud Center, Inc Norman A. Willox, President IDENTITY THEFT OVERVIEW Identity theft affects all of society. However, to date, most of the focus has been on the consumer victim of identity theft. Although the harm caused by identity theft to consumers is real, by focusing solely on that harm, we risk missing, or at least misunderstanding, the serious financial harm that identity theft causes to private industry. Since private industry’s financial losses from identity theft are ultimately borne by consumers in the form of higher prices for products and services, it behooves us to appreciate the significant impact that identity theft has on industry. Further, we must recognize that the Internet, which provides so much potential to the world’s commerce, also stands to provide so much potential to the world’s identity thieves. Ultimately identity theft is simply a tool to commit fraud and the Internet, unfortunately, can also be used as such a tool. The Internet takes the shadowy form of the identity thief and provides him or her the shelter of its anonymity, and the speed of its electronic transmissions.
