Archives Wednesday November 29, 2000 AZ Student Media New Web site lists college crime stats By Jose Ceja Arizona Daily Wildcat Parents and students can research schools nationwide Before strolling down any dark alleys around campus, it may be wise to consult a new Web site offered by the U.S. Department of Education. Crime statistics for more than 600 colleges, universities and career schools are available at ope.ed.gov/security, which can help parents and students evaluate colleges. Various crime statistics - from liquor violations to hate crimes - are accessible under the amendments to the Higher Education Act of 1965 that require the Department of Education to collect crime data from colleges and make the data publicly accessible. Katherine Mills, a studio art freshman who came to the University of Arizona from Illinois, said the information would have been helpful in choosing a college. Mills said she took a tour of the University of New Mexico and later found out about the school's high crime rate. "They didn't tell us anything about that on the tour," she said.

Crime Stats Still Trickling In As Dept. Of Education Extends Deadline By Caryn Rousseau
    TMS Campus Washington Correspondent
A U.S. Department of Education program to list updated crime statistics for more than 6,000 campuses online has fallen short of its deadline. The department has extended the deadline for institutions to turn in statistics until Tuesday, Oct. 24. A TMS Campus search of the site, http://ope.ed.gov/security, finds statistics missing for such high profile institutions as UCLA, Harvard University, Indiana University, Boston University, Northwestern University, Georgetown University and the University of Iowa. "A lot of schools waited until the end," said Stephanie Babyak, spokesperson for the Education Department. The system designed to input the information into the computers became overloaded and lengthened the process, Babyak said. The site allows students to search for schools according to geographic location, degree program, size and institution type. Each listing should provide local and campus statistics including criminal homicide, manslaughter, sex offenses, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, auto theft, arson and hate crimes. The crimes are compared to rates in 1997 and 1998 and listed under criminal and hate offenses and arrests. Statistics also must include arrests for possession of illegal weapons, drugs and liquor and the number of people receiving disciplinary action for these violations. University systems are required to report separate statistics for each campus and publish where each crime occurred.
