In July 1853 Russia occupied territories in the Crimea that had previously been controlled by Turkey. Britain and France was concerned about Russian expansion and attempted to achieve a negotiation withdrawal. Turkey, unwilling to grant concessions declared war on Russia.
After the Russians destroyed the Turkish fleet at Sinope in the Black Sea in November 1853, Britain and France joined the war against Russia. On the 20th September 1854 the Allied army defeated the Russian army at the battle of Alma River (September 1854) but the battle of Balaklava (October 1854) was inconclusive.
Newspaper reports on the way the war was being conducted by W. H. Russell of The Times led to strong criticism of the British Army. As a result of Russell's reports Florence Nightingale received permission to take nurses to the Crimea. Sevastopol fell to the Allied troops on 8th September 1855 and the new Russian Emperor

T he Royal Scots, the oldest Infantry Regiment of the Line in the British Army, was formed in 1633 when Sir John Hepburn under a Royal Warrant granted by King Charles I, raised a body of men in Scotland for service in France. By 1635 he commanded a force of over 8,000, including many who had fought as mercenaries in the "Green Brigade" for King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden. It was by virtue of the Royal Warrant that the entire Regiment was considered as British; a regular force in a standing Army which could be recalled to Britain at will. And in 1661, the Regiment was summoned to Britain to bridge the gap between the disbandment of the New Model Army and the creation of a Regular Army, organised along the same lines as the British units in foreign service. The Regiment was thus the original model for all others. In 1680 the Regiment was sent to Tangier and won its first battle honour, On its return to England in 1684 the title "The Royal Regiment of Foot" was conferred by Charles II. During Monmouth's rebellion in 1685, five companies formed part of the force concentrated against the rebels who they met at Sedgemoor. The following year, the Regiment was divided into two battalions and was not to have less until 1949. The Royal Scots saw service under Malborough during the war of the Spanish Succession and followed this with garrison duty in Ireland where they it remained until 1742. From this date the two battalions were usually to be separated and posted far apart. The 1st Battalion moved in 1743 to Germany to take part in the Austrian War of Succession, and was involved in the Battle of Fontenoy. In the following year, the 2nd Battalion became involved in the fight against the Young Pretender which culminated in the Battle of Culloden. In 1751 the army was numbered and thereafter the Regiment was officially designated the First or Royal Regiment of Foot.

A British view of the Crimean War: introduction
Marjie Bloy Ph.D., Senior Research Fellow, National University of Singapore
o far as Britain was concerned, the Crimean War was part of the wider Eastern Question that had existed since the time of Pitt the Younger . However, on this occasion the conflicts were not contained as they had been previously and so the situation degenerated into a war. It was one more foreign matter which broke yet another British government, showing the importance of foreign affairs. The Crimean War began under the Earl of Aberdeen who was Prime Minister between 1852 and 1855; it ended under Palmerston who replaced Aberdeen when the latter's ministry was brought down by a vote of 'No Confidence' in 1855. The Crimean War was the first war involving European nations since 1815: the aims of the peacemakers at the Congress of Vienna , to maintain a peace for at least 25 years, had been more than met. However, in terms of British history, during the entire period of Victoria's reign (1837-1901) there was not a single year in which the British army was not fighting someone, somewhere in the world. The Powers involved in the Crimean War were, on one side

The more immediate occasion was a dispute between Russia and France over the Palestinian holy places. Challenging the claim of Russia to guardianship of the holy places, France in 1852 secured from Sultan Abd al-Majid certain privileges for the Latin churches. Russian counterdemands were turned down (1853) by the Ottoman government. In July, 1853, Russia retorted by occupying the Ottoman vassal states of Moldavia and Walachia, and in October, after futile negotiations, the Ottomans declared war. In Mar., 1854, England and France, having already dispatched fleets to the Black Sea, declared war on Russia; Sardinia followed suit in Jan., 1855. Austria remained neutral, but by threatening to enter the war on the Ottoman side forced Russia to evacuate Moldavia and Walachia, which were occupied (Aug., 1854) by Austrian troops. In Sept., 1854, allied troops landed in the Crimea, with the object of capturing Sevastopol . The Russian fortress, defended by

The Cover The Crimean War by John Sweetman Guide Rating - Although the Crimean War involved four large global powers, namely Russia, France, Turkey and Britain, few people can tell you why it was fought, and fewer still can explain the aims of each side. Conversely, and despite - or perhaps because of - over a century of journalistic and historical analysis depicting the war as a waste of lives and resources, some components have become legend, especially the Charge of the Light Brigade and Florence Nightingale. Osprey lists both Florence and the Light Brigade on the back of this 'Essential Histories' book, and it's a sensible way of attracting readers to a much-neglected conflict. The opening section of The Crimean War - which the page header calls a 'background', but is more accurately described by the chapter title as a 'panorama of the conflict' - briefly outlines several of the broader issues concerning the dispute. These include the role of press and photographers, the perceived need to fight, the change in title from 'Russian' to 'Crimean' War, non-Crimean conflicts, and the joy of victory, which modern narratives seem to have lost.

    INTRODUCTION
The upheavals of the French Revolution came to an end in 1815 with the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy in France and the international agreement known as the Concert of Vienna. Although periodic revolutions disturbed the tranquility of the major states in 1830 and 1848-49 there was not a major military confrontation until the Crimean War of 1854-56 in which France and Britain came to the defense of the Turkish Empire against Russia.
The young Russian count Leo Tolstoy, not yet a novelist or a committed pacifist, saw action at the front and recorded his experiences in three short stories known as The Sebastopol Sketches (1856). Tolstoy initially is very patriotic but gradually comes to see the waste and destructiveness of war and condemns the terrible corruption of the Russian officer class who profited by selling food and supplies needed by the Russian troops.
On the other side of the front the situation of the British troops was publicised by one of the earliest professional war correspondents, William Howard Russell, who wrote for the influential London
