A Letter from the Crimea
With the clues provided by a single letter, Brian Oldham was able to recreate in minute detail the life of Walter Patterson who served in the Crimean War. This inspired him to create an index of the surviving records of the other soldiers who served. By May of next year an index will be available to over 100,000 soldiers who fought in the Crimean War. The idea of the index all began with Walter's letter. It was shown to me in response to a request for any documents to start my wife's family history. Great-aunt Gladys' box revealed the letter folded up neatly into a small square. Transcription of Walter's letter
Camp near Varna August 2nd 1854 Dear Mother
Private Walter Patterson
6th Iniskilling Dragoons,Turkey
Monthly return of the Inniskilling Dragoons for October 1840, showing Walter Patterson joining from the Royal Hibernian School.
(PRO, WO 17/527)

Who was Walter? Why had the letter been kept? Where was Varna? The answers to these questions brought me into contact with the Crimean War. I was fortunate that Walter had included his regiment. Without that vital clue research into Crimean soldiers is almost impossible. The new index will help many people to write similar stories to this. Read Brian Oldham's full account in Issue 11 of ANCESTORS.

Call number: TR652.B35 1996 A good source for background on Fenton (mostly post-Crimean War) and the culture of realism in British Orientalism, as well as Fenton's training as a painter and how he translated the "high art" of painting to photography. Assists in understanding that, given the constraints of photographic techniques at the time, Fenton sought to create, through the poses in which he set his subjects, photographs that could be viewed as paintings (paintings depicting military scenes being considered "high art"). Call number: TR647.F46 1988 A very good representative sample of the range of Fenton's work from an exhibit at the Hayward Gallery, London, in 1988. Unfortunately, not all the Crimean War photos are included in this volume, though does include all eleven views issued as the Panorama of the Plateau of Sebastopol. This book details the gallant yet suicidal Charge of the Light Brigade, now immortalised in film: in the words of Tennyson, 'Into the Valley of Death rode the Six Hundred'. It relates the reports made by the first real war correspondant, William Russell of the London Times - reports which served only to highlight the army's problems - and memorialises the heroic deeds of Florence Nightingale, who struggled to save young men from the most formidable enemy in the Crimean War: not the Russians, but cholera.

FENTON, Roger b. Mar 1819; d. 8 Aug 1869 Roger Fenton is particularly known for his coverage of the Crimean War, which is a pity, because it only formed a small proportion of his output in other areas, and also somewhat obscures the major part he played in promoting photography in general. After studying at London University, Fenton studied art in London, and later in Paris under the painter Paul Delaroche . However, having had little success as a painter, in 1844 he returned to London and studied law. In January 1851 he visited Paris, and was impressed by the freedom that photographers in France had been granted as a result of the Daguerreotype process having been made available to all. By contrast, progress in England was slow because of Talbot's claims arising from his patent. In 1852 he visited Russia, and his photographs were amongst the first ever to be seen in England, guaranteeing him instant fame. Back in England, he proposed the formation of a Photographic Society, and on 10 January 1853 this came into being, and he served as its Secretary for three years. (This is now the Royal Photographic Society Fenton photographed Queen Victoria's family, and also became the official photographer to the British Museum.

It created a heroic myth out of the Charge of the Light Brigade, in Florence Nightingale produced one of history's great heroines, was the first conflict to be covered by the press and pointed the way to what mass warfare would be like in the twentieth century. Based on the diplomatic and military despatches of the period, many of them previously unseen, Trevor Royle's fascinating book is the first complete account of a war which helped to shape the modern world.
