What Is a Mailing List?
A mailing list is often called a discussion list, e-mail conference, and listserv. The basic purpose of a mailing list is to provide a network through which the e-mail messages of each participant can be distributed to everyone subscribed to the mailing list. By distributing each e-mail message to every list participant, the mailing list users can respond to questions, statements, and the likethereby creating an on-going discussion or conversation. Most mailing lists are topic-specific and encourage collaboration and networking among their participants. And the topics of mailing lists are as diverse as the participants who join them. The mailing lists you will find mentioned in On the Net are educational discussion lists that focus on writing and writing instruction, but numerous other mailing lists have been developed to address the interests and concerns of other academic disciplines and occupations, popular culture interests (such as Star Trek and Barbie), parenting, sports, and more. Email Discussion Lists
On this page: Introduction Joining List Directories External Links
Introduction
Email discussion lists (or mailing lists) allow people to discuss a common topic by email. There are a large number of discussion lists covering most aspects of law and related subjects. Use the list directories to find relevant lists (the CASE list provides a good summary of UK law lists). All you need to join a list is an email address. It's also possible to read and search the archives of many lists online. Some lists are ‘moderated’ to make sure the list stays on topic or ‘closed’ to restrict it to a certain group of people. Top Related Pages External Links
Joining a list
To join or ‘subscribe to’ a discussion list, you need to send an email to the list address, although it's increasingly possible to join lists over the web. Each discussion list will have different instructions, but the email you send should look something like:

new items are marked with a What peacemaking is
The peacemaking model of criminal justice is emerging as an effective, humane policy approach. Peacemaking emphasizes social justice, conflict resolution, rehabilitation, and a belief that people must cooperate in democratic institutions in order to develop meaningful communities. The peace perspective is sometimes misunderstood as being soft on crime as it rejects the rhetoric of the war-on-crime perspective. However, crime is not excused. Both the individual's culpability and the contribution of the institutions of society are taken into account. The peace perspective requires social justice. Only by transforming both the criminal and society can we hope to develop effective, fair and human responses to crime. Other stuff

Statement on Mandatory Sentencing
Professor Alice Tay, President, Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, HREOC Press Conference, 17 February 2000
First of all I'd like to thank you all for coming to here today. It is timely that we meet the day before Mr Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations arrives in Australia. It is from the United Nations that the international obligations we are discussing today are sourced. As a nation, Australia is committed to the active protection of human rights in East Timor. These human rights are derived from the same obligations I have just mentioned. However, Australia's mandatory sentencing laws mean that we violate the same international standards we are working so vigorously to protect in East Timor, less than an hour's flight away from Darwin. It's quite unusual for us to call directly on the federal government for urgent action and it's been quite a while since we've done so. However, the issue of mandatory sentencing has been of great concern to the Commission since 1992 when it was first introduced in Western Australia in 1992.

Doubly deviant: gender/ed deviance and the transgendered offender
Claire Cahill, Dept of Criminology, University of Melbourne, Australia Email: cmcs@cyberspace.net.au This paper explores the intersections between contemporary meanings of "gender" and constructions of "deviance" by referring to the criminal convictions of three transgendered people in the United States in the first three months of 1996. What is remarkable about these cases is the consistency with which the gender identity of the defendants was openly contested by the various agencies of the state, and by the media in its coverage of these cases. An analysis of the media coverage of these three cases reveals the ways in which the transgendered offender is constructed as "doubly deviant" in the popular imagination.
