THE WRITING PROCESS
Invention: Writing the Critique To critique a piece of writing is to do the following: 1) describe: give the reader a sense of the writer's overall purpose and meaning 2) analyze: show how it is put together by dividing it into its main sections or aspects 3) interpret: define the significance (meaning and importance) of each part 4) assess: make a judgement of the work's worth or value Here are two structures for critiques, one for non-fiction and one for literature.
The Critique Shape for Non-Fiction
Introduction name of author and work general overview of subject and summary of author's argument focusing (or thesis) sentence indicating how you will divide the whole work for discussion or the particular elements you will discuss Body objective description of a major point in the work detailed analysis of the logic and relationships interpretation of the concept repetition of description, analysis, interpretation if more than one major concept is covered Conclusion overall interpretation relationship of particular interpretations to subject as a whole critical assessment of the value, worth, or meaning of the work, both negative and positive

    Short Story Tips
    ... Classic Short Stories
When critiquing a piece of writing, consider the following elements:

You may find it easier to put your critiques into the headings below, and give your views on each topic. Some members prefer to break the story down into parts and refer to each element in the story that they feel needs further work.
What can be problematic is when a member writes about how the story has affected them personally and/or offers praise. Although praise and sentiment are very worthwhile they are not what a writer needs most when trying to "polish" their work to perfection. In the end, it is ultimately whatever you are most comfortable with, but at all times consider what would you most want for feedback on your writing.
    CHARACTERISATION:
Do the characters seem real with depth and
emotion, or are they recognizable stereotypes? Are the motives of the characters understandable and logical to the story? Are the good guy(s) likeable and the bad guy(s) really bad? The characters are very important to any story and they must be believable. There is room in any critique for characterization.

Brecht and his Friends: Writing as Critique
    Amitava Kumar
September 22. First day of class. Fourteen in the morning class; sixteen in the afternoon one. Hand out the syllabus with course requirements. Spend most of the time discussing Brecht. Just three lines: "Ah, what an age it is / When to speak of trees is almost a crime / For it is a kind of silence about injustice." The point, of course, is not whether we speak of trees but the uses of our doing so. In other words, let's ask howrather, whywe speak about anything September 23. Writing cognition contestation I have these three words on the syllabus for today. I have a picture from an essay by Michele Barrett. It shows a billboard, an ad for a Fiat, which reads, "If it were a lady, it would get its bottom pinched." Beneath it, someone has spray-painted the words, "If this lady was a car she'd run you down." The students have ten minutes to respond. In the second class, three men sitting together chuckle at the picture. The women, almost uniformly, are angered by the ad. One of them, while reading out her response, explains that she is angry " because she is a woman." This happens a few times. I wonder whether this is because the students are nervous about the male instructor's response to what they so strongly feel. Later, I'm unable to decide whether I should have shared this point with my students; at that moment, I am only able to address the point obliquely by agreeing with a couple of the students that the person who spray-painted the protest could have been a woman

Dear Student, Your last assignment is to write an evaluation. I want you to decide whether this tutorial is worth taking and to explain why or why not. Some things to know about evaluation. Evaluation presupposes some standard of judgement. Standards vary and may not be explicit; nevertheless, there has to be a standard. If I dislike Bon Jovi's music, it's probably because I prefer Bruce Springsteen. Springsteen is my standard of judgement. Obviously, the next question is "What about Springsteen's music do you like?" This implies that my standard is not really Springsteen but that Springsteen performs to my standards. I like a melody I can follow. I like lyrics that go beyond mindless repetition for 3 minutes of a 4-line chorus. Thus, I prefer "The End of the World As We Know It" to "This One Goes Out To The One I Love," both by REM. Standards are usually relative and not absolute. While most people believe it is wrong to kill, most people also believe killing is a necessary part of war.

    Overview
As with the learning of any skill, getting feedback on your writing is ... well, "critical," and the Workshop is designed with this in mind. Our critique services make it easy to get personalized feedback quickly, while the writing is still fresh in your mind . Most importantly, your work is analyzed by Tom and his staff writers, all of whom have studied with him for years. So the evaluation and suggestions are geared to the principles taught in the Workshop Series curriculum . And in case you're the sensitive type (as writers often are), don't worry! Here at the Workshop we focus on the constructive part of the term "constructive criticism."
There are two types of critique service available:
    • critiques of exercises assigned in the course modules on CD-ROM, and
    • critiques of your own essays, short stories, novellas, etc.
In either case, you receive an email document that includes clear, concise and constructive notes. The critiques are designed to highlight the things you're doing well, while giving you pragmatic suggestions for sharpening your skills where there's room for improvement. Take a look at the critique sample to see how this process can turn a rough short story into a polished, publishable piece.

It's relatively short and very engaging and we're proud to have contributed to it's evolution into a fine piece of writing. See for yourself! Jim tells us he did some revision for Version 4 and then submitted it for publication. We wish him the best of luck and will let you know when/where it comes out.

Search for Teachers (SVTC) NGfL Scotland Creative Writing – an online critique service In session 1999-2000, the Solutions in English consultancy offered an Internet creative writing critique service to senior students in seven secondary schools throughout Renfrewshire Council. English departments and the education authority adviser had identified the need for this group. Problems had been noted in the following areas:
    • The lack of time available within the heavy curriculum of Higher and Certificate of Sixth Year Studies (A-level equivalents) for teaching creative writing effectively; the difficulties of keeping students to creative writing deadlines given the pressure of other - perhaps less nebulous - studies within the subject and in other subjects; the lack of opportunity for students to write for audiences other than their peers or, more likely, their teacher; the lack of opportunity to confer with other writers about the process of writing; the lack of opportunity and the prohibitive cost of access to professional writers to stimulate ideas and give feedback on the students’ own writing; the need to utilise Information and Communications Technology which was changing the face of English classrooms within the local authority.
