It streches in the form of an arc from the Danube in the northeast to Istria in the west and Boka Kotorska in the southeast. Its area is 56,538 sq.km., and the area of the coastal sea about 31,900 sq.km. Geographically, it is situated on the cross-roads between Central Europe and the Mediterranean. Geographical position: Croatia is situated close to densely populated and industrially developed European countries. Many internationally important transport routes cross Croatia. The importance of the geographical position of the Republic of Croatia is also enhanced by the Adriatic Sea, the northernmost gulf of the Mediterranean which is the closest to the central part of the European continent. The most important routes are centered along the Sava river, the Adriatic and the Drava river; there are also several important transversal routes from the Austrian and Hungarian border to the Adriatic coast (to Rijeka and Split).

Climate. Fresh summers, long and snowy winters, and an abundance of precipitation are the main characteristics of the Risnjak climate. At higher altitudes, the average temperature is 12.6 o C in July, 3.3 o C in January, with the average annual precipitation of 3579 mm. The rainfall is most abundant in the autumn, which means that Risnjak is under the maritime, Mediterranean precipitation pattern. Snow stays on the ground at the mountain lodge at 1418 m for an average of 157 days each year, and it may reach 4 meters in height. The relative humidity (degree of saturation of the atmosphere with water vapor) is also high (it does not drop under 80 per cent in any single month), which is important for the vegetation in Risnjak and in Gorski Kotar as a whole. Geographical
characteristics
Gorski Kotar is a highland region in western Croatia. Geotectonically, it is part of the Dinaric mountain system, which is "constrained" here to only 40 km. This is where the Pannonian and the Peripannonian areas come closest to the Adriatic, and where the divide separating the Adriatic and the Black Sea drainage systems is no more than 10 -15 km from the coast.

The Former Yugoslavia
Dateline: 01/19/98 (Rev. 04/14/99) With the fall of the Austria-Hungary empire at the end of World War I, the victors threw together a new country which was composed of more than twenty ethnic groups - Yugoslavia. Just over seventy years later that piecemeal nation disintegrated and war broke out between the new states. This overview should help clear up some confusion about what's in place of the former Yugoslavia now. Marshal Tito was able to keep Yugoslavia unified from the formation of the country from 1945 until his death in 1980. At the end of World War II, Tito ousted the Soviet Union and was then "excommunicated" by Josef Stalin. Due to Soviet blockades and sanctions, Yugoslavia began developing trade and diplomatic relationships with western European governments, even though it was a communist country. After the death of Stalin, relations between the USSR and Yugoslavia improved. Following Tito's death in 1980, factions in Yugoslavia became agitated and demanded more autonomy. It was the fall of the USSR in 1991 that finally broke up the jigsaw puzzle of a state. About 250,000 were killed by wars and "ethnic cleansing" in the new countries.
