Geography History Churches Surnames Curiosity ... Dedication Sitno is located at the eastern part of the Split area. This is an area of ancient Poljica, where the Poljica Principality lasted for centuries.
The village lies in the western part of the middle Poljica, and, according to The Statute of Poljica, it is one of twelve main Poljica villages - so called katuni . Sitno is bordering these villages: - in the north Dugopolje, Kotlenice i Dolac Donji
    - in the east Dubrava i Tugare
    - in the south Srinjine
    - in the west Zrnovnica. According to the last census (1991), Sitno Donje had 300 inhabitants, while Sitno Gornje had 297 inhabitants. The Poljica Principality extends southeastwards of Split, around the Mosor Mountain , which extends across Poljica like a 27 kilometer-long spine ( map of Mosor ). The highest peak in the west is Veliki Kabal (Ljuti kamen-1339 m), and in the east it is Sv. Jure (Kozik-1319 m). Near the Poljica coast two mountain branches extend, Sridivica or Markovaca (from the Zrnovnica river to village Srinjine, with altitude of 433 m), and Vrsina (from the Zrnovnica river to the town Omis, with a length of 17 km, and a height up to 584 m).
The Cetina river surrounds Poljica from the town Trilj to the river mouth. The length of that border is 50 km. The northwest border of the Poljica Principality is the most difficult one to determine.

    Geography of Bosnia and Herzegovina
    By Thierry Domin
    First published in
    SFOR Informer#124, October 17, 2001
Surrounded by Croatia in the Southwest and much of the North, by Serbia and Montenegro in the East, Bosnia and Herzegovina is not such a large country. It has borders with Croatia (at the Southwest and the largest part of the North), Serbia (at the Northeast) and Montenegro (at the Southeast).
The country is only 51,100 square kilometres (as an example, Switzerland is 41,293 square kilometres), with the shape of an isosceles triangle; each side of the right angle measures about 300 kilometres, from Trebinje to Bijeljina and from Bijeljina to Velika Kladusa. It is this shape that is symbolised on the BiH national flag.
    Facts and figures
The hilly relief explains the hydrology. The rivers quite unanimously flow towards the North because the natural slope of the mountains gradually climbs towards the South. From west to east, the main rivers are: the Una and its tributary, the Sana (which both give their names to the Una Sana Canton, (Canton 1); the Vrbas (which flows through Banja Luka); the Bosna; and finally the Drina (which mainly forms the border with the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia). All these rivers flow, directly or indirectly, into the Sava River, a tributary of the Danube. The Sava River forms the border with Croatia. The only sizeable exception is the Neretva, flowing first towards the North, but turning back in the vicinity of Konjic and finally flowing into the Adriatic Sea.

    GEOGRAPHY
Croatia resembles an arc, with a long Adriatic coastline forming the western leg, and the land between the rivers Drava and Sava forming the northern leg. The capital, Zagreb, sits on the intersection of the northern and western legs of the arc. The Adriatic coastline has as many as 700 islands, while the 1,500-meter high Dinaric Alps run the length of the country. The Styrian Alps run north to southeast down the northern leg of Croatia, descending to the Hungarian plain in the extreme east at Osijek; much of this land is lower lying than the rest of Croatia and includes areas of marshlands. The Dalmatian coast and islands are important to future economy. The rivers in western Croatia tend to be small mountain streams. The Danube forms the eastern border with Yugoslavia (Serbia) while the other two large rivers, the Sava and Drava, form the southern and northern borders with Bosnia-Herzegovian and Hungary respectively. The land area between the rivers is dissected by many other smaller tributaries. The Adriatic coastline is the most prominent feature of Croatia. It runs the entire length of the western border, from the 430-km Istrian peninsula in the north to Dubrovnik in the south. The coast is highly indented with rocky cliffs and many small inlets.
